Falcon
Harriman
express liner of the Hawk line. "Noisy"
Rhysling hopped a ride on it back to Earth. He was in the power room when
an accident killed the chief jetman, and died himself while working to shut
down the engines and reduce the radioactivity to safe levels.
"Noisy"
Rhysling's most famous song. It evolved through many versions over 20 or
so years, the final version being recorded aboard the Falcon
just before Rhysling's death.
Business tycoon who inspired and largely funded many space-related
endeavors, including the first trip to the moon. Harriman is mentioned
indirectly in most of the Future History stories, mostly in businesses and
institutions bearing his name. "Green Hills of Earth" mentions Harriman Hall,
a training center for pilots.
City built under the Moon's surface, including not only habitations but
farms and other necessities, plus a varied cultural life. "Noisy" Rhysling
visited it.
Born in the Ozarks, he became a jetman second class for the Harriman
Line. After being blinded, he became an itinerant musician, bumming rides
on his former employer's ships to various planets on the pretext of his being
a "distressed spacer." He continued hitchhiking even after the Harriman Line
officially banned the practice. He died while trying to control a power room
emergency in the Falcon.
Most of his music was published posthumously.
The Heinlein
Society was founded by Virginia Heinlein on behalf of her husband, science
fiction author Robert Anson Heinlein, to "pay forward" the legacy of Robert A. Heinlein to future generations of "Heinlein's Children."
