Jim's right. King is scary in more ways than one.... I'm looking forward to the Hugos next year or perhaps the year after, though, when I fully expect that the complete Heinlein bio will be nominated and a serious contender.

I think we might want to arrange some sort of group at WorldCon 2012 (Chicago) if the second volume comes out by December 31, or WorldCon 2013 (Austin, TX) if it comes out in 2012. I'd love to be there for that award. I was, in fact, at WorldCon 2011, not surprisingly because it was in Reno and that's where I live. I've been to five WorldCons in the past 20 years, and a number of regional cons in that period. This one was special, however, because my 12-year-old nephew Guled came out for it, his first con. He had a blast. My sister, who came with him, mostly stayed at the con hotel (a luxurious casino called the Peppermill) and enjoyed the pool and the spa. She'll read some SF but isn't really a fan. Her son is. I sent him home with a couple of Heinlein juvies, expect he'll be joining the Heinlein Society soon.

Never say never, but I'm pretty sure I'll never attend a Con. I've taken my son when he was younger to many Anime cons, and I can't imagine the types that populate the sci-fi ones are much different in spirit. It doesn't help that I'm not much of an admirer of most science fiction, either. Now, of course, the Centennial was amazing - one of the highlights of my life - but that will never be repeated. |

I agree -- 2013 is more likely than 2012 for the next Heinlein Bio Hugo nomination. I also like Austin, or did in the 1970s. I haven't been there since -- have spent precious little time in Texas since I went off to college. Cons are not for everybody, but there's a lot there for a wide variety of people. Guled had a blast, which didn't surprise me -- he's a sociable kid with more people skills at 12 than I have at 50. He's not a geek -- he's just spooky intelligent like geeks. Having adults treat him as an intelligent human being and an equal (as SF fans tend to treat young fans) was a revelation to him and he ate it up.

It has been awhile since I was last in Austin -- sometime in the early 1970s, I think, before my mother's first cousin died. He was the family connection, the reason that we visited Austin as well as Houston and San Antonio. So I won't assume that much of what I remember is still there or unchanged after 35+ years.... However, the Texas hill country west of San Antonio, around Junction, is probably a drier version of what it has always been. Which is gorgeous, lovely, peaceful -- site of some of the best memories of my childhood. |

I was last in Austin this March, and a couple of other times over the past few years. It's MUCH bigger than I remember back in "the day," with much more traffic, but still quite recognizable. The places, like 6th Street, around the UT campus that were at one time charming and bohemian alt-music scenes are still there, but much more commercialized. I think Lake Travis is probably a muddy hole in the ground by now with the drought. I haven't checked out Barton Springs at Zilker Park in a while, but since it was fed by underground springs, I'm betting it's still holding up. My favorite place in the world to swim. |
