Post Kids at Aerospace Challenge
Every year I serve as a judge Fiesta Bowl Aerospace Challenge, it is a very large competition for 5th through 8th grade. They all get the same mission to plan (mining H3 on the moon), but also need a secondary mission and this year that was to come up with a spot to keep the crew fit. The required mission did come from a movie we all discussed a couple of years ago.

On the third day I was judging the design of the base. That included their launch facilities, living, and working spaces for their crew.

One team (on the younger side, I think they were either 5th or 6th grade) when I asked about launch facilities said they were going to use a rail gun (it was on their model) so that the H3 tanks could be launched into space and collected in orbit to be brought down to earth. When they showed it to me I said something about like “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress”). I got a blank stare back; so I will admit that the movie did have a rail gun in it so they could have got it somewhere else. Next while they were showing me their crew working arrangements they pointed to their exercise facility. Their sport was flying; one of the little girls on the team told me they would have special wings that they would strap on. I said OK one of you has to be a Heinlein fan. They all still had that blank stare so I suggested they might try reading some.
I thought after if it was not one of the students then it would have to be one of the parents.

Ed
