I am going to dip into the vast knowledgfe on this blog for help. I remember a speech given by the new commander of Pearl Harbor after the attack. It was notable because of 5 points he made about Japanese errors that cost them the war. The two I remember were that most the sailors were in churchs off ships and the oil reserves inland were not hit at all. Along with the rest of the speech the Officer speaking said these were great over sights on the plans the Japanese had made. I know there alot of naval historians with interest or connection to this board. Maybe some one knows of what I am speaking and can help me find the complete speech. I find it inspiring in this awful moment this offficer delivered hope to the American people who may have heard it. I want to put it in my INSPIRATION FILE as a piece to tell others about who are coming from a disasterous situation.

First, this isn't a blog. It's a forum.

I don't know of such a speech, but there were a number of analyses of the raid that pointed out "positives" that helped keep it from being a total disaster. As I recall offhand, the main points were:

Inland oil and fuel reserves not hit. (Would have destroyed nearly 100% of Pacific reserves.)
Ships sunk in shallow water, many easily refloated and repaired. (Sunk at sea = lost.)
Ships in harbor, reduced crews aboard.
Ships in harbor, better medical care available.
Ships in harbor, better firefighting and damage control available.
Japan unwilling to bring fleet into range, meaning all destructive force had to be limited to air-carried.
Japan not prepared to seize and hold area after raid.

As it was, the "destroyed" fleet whipped Japan's ass just months later at Midway... because of the above. Japan would have made a more effective strike by luring the Pacific fleet out to a sea battle, which likely would have left us with no Pacific defenses at all.

I apologize for my incorrect use of the term blog. I am learning as I go. You have come through with the information I was looking for. Thank you. If some one comes up with the speech that used these facts my file will be complete. This forum is a fantastic source of worthwhile information. You sir are a major pillar of it's success.

I quite enjoyed Harry Turtledove's two-part alternative history of the occupation of Hawaii by the Japanese after Pearl Harbor.
