"Have Spacesuit" to be filmed?

A near-zero production company with no track record except distribution of one NASA-based documentary. They may not even hold the option.
*Yawn*.

Re: "Have Spacesuit" to be filmed?
Wasn't there a John Varley script for Have Space Suit . . .?

Re: "Have Spacesuit" to be filmed?
I've heard the rumor. Also a rumor of a script that more or less combined Mother Thing and Oscar into some sort of ghost-alien that haunted a former ISS worker's suit. Not sure if they're the same thing.
This would be, in some ways, one of the easiest Heinlein properties to film. Even a modest budget at a second-string studio could, with care and today's CGI, turn out a dazzler.
Except for the unpleasant parts of the story, like achievement through hard work, human nobility, a half-love story involving a 12 year old girl, etc.
I would expect no better result than for Puppet Masters - a recognizable form of the story, Hollywoodized and penny-pinched into something with BO appeal.
But just imagine, say, William H. Macy making a long pause, taking a pipe from his mouth, and saying to a soot-covered Kip, "You should know better than to manufacture explosives in a frame building, son." Then walking away, book in hand.

A film project produced by David Heyman with a screenplay by David Roberts (definitely not this Jupiter 9 company) was announced some years ago.
I recall meeting someone at the Heinlein Centennial who was working on it.
Some brief accounts derived from Variety and Hollywood Reporter are floating around the Web.

Luck had absolutely nothing to do with it.
Unless you think it's lucky every time a batter hits a ball.
Or, as Spenser likes to put it: luck is the residue of design.

It's amazing the things you find when you Google: http://www.fullcastaudio.com/tek9.asp?p ... c=jnqmkme8They sound *way* too much like they're reading, though, rather than performing. Or is it just me? So many things are just me... Quite a lot of good stuff, though, at: . Most notably, this: http://riofriospacetime.blogspot.com/20 ... ravel.html

Re: "Have Spacesuit" to be filmed?
My attitude towards the modernity of the story has swung over quite an arc. When I first read it, I didn't have enough worldview to judge it. A few years later, it seemed a little 50s-ish and dated. Through the seventies, it was godawful dated. Then a funny thing happened to me and (I think) society; it's not really dated at all. If anything, with very minor points it could be set in the here and now of any time from 1990 to ten years from now.
There are things I would touch up in a screenplay, but not much. The critical thing is to get Kip's arc of character growth exactly - *exactly* - right. From a world no bigger than his backyard laboratory to spokesman for the human race... that's a big damned arc.

Re: "Have Spacesuit" to be filmed?
And for all that, I see no reason at all it wouldn't sell as a period piece, if done properly.
The problem that's common with adaptations is that the writers don't figure out *all* of the interactions, and how they change if you update things.

"Have Spacesuit" as a film? I can think of many of Heinlein's other works that would be better on the big screen. "Glory Road" for instance would make a fabulous movie.

Gravity also has the rather direct Heinleinian steal of using a fire extinguisher as a propulsion unit. I love beyond reason the moment when Ryan flings the empty extinguisher away for one last bit of delta-vee.
