The are out, covering works of SF and fantasy that might have been awarded at an imaginary 1941 Hugo ceremony, had the Hugos, not created until 1953, existed in 1941. (Worldcon that year was in Denver, and Heinlein was Guest of Honor.) Under the rules, the works must have been published or released during the calendar year 1940. With me so far? Anyway, Robert Anson Heinlein made out like a bandit. Not bad for the productions of the second year of his SF-writing career. Among his nominations: Best Novella Coventry "If This Goes On—" Magic, Inc. Best Novelette Blowups Happen The Roads Must Roll Best Short Story Requiem There's stiff competition from other great writers in these categories, but our man has a pretty good chance of posthumously taking home an award or two from the Kansas City Worldcon. |

Interesting that the copyright date listed in The Past Through Tomorrow is 1939. |

I'm with uriihy. Requiem is the one book nominated for a retro-Hugo that unambiguously deserves the award. Coventry and Magic, Inc. are both good and I think they're contenders, but Requiem is a little jewel -- the best thing Heinlein wrote before WWII. |

It was a sincere pleasure to be in the room and watch THS President Keith Kato accept those awards. Seeing the genuine emotion in A.E. van Vogt's granddaughter as she accepted his award for Slan was probably the best moment of the evening, though. |
