Post Turns of phrase
I'm posting this as a sticky topic - one that will stay at the top of the list. Feel free to add your finds and favorites to it at any time. Think of it as an online graffiti wall.

I came across this phrase in Michael Chabon's The Yiddish Policeman's Union and it struck me as beautifully relevant to the present day. You know the holes left in buildings when a business's sign is removed? "The braille of failure."

Ooh! A word thread! Off the top of my head:

A friend describes himself as a paleocon.

That hesitation as the other guy at the restaurant seems to be reaching for his wallet but has no intention of following through is called shellout falter.

An ignoranus is someone who is both stupid and an asshole.

Nickname given to a famous sailor and captain who was known for approaching docks at full speed and sometimes miscalculated the distance when braking: Captain Crunch. (I'll let somebody *else* tell who this refers to and where they read it.) ;-)

Nope, although close. The individual I'm referring to was not fictional, and lived in the 20th century. ;-)
