This book about the seamier aspects of the alimentary canal is by my favorite humorous science writer, Mary Roach (author of Stiff, Bonk, and Packing for Mars). The contents range from frivolous fart-humor distractions to seriously weird but educational information, veering from distasteful to nauseating throughout, but always with a highly engaging wit. You will learn far more than you ever wanted to know about spit, peristalsis, and other aspects of digestion, but a main takeaway is just how many people are seriously working on the kind of studies that fuel the Ignoble awards.

I love Mary Roach! I saw her speak live at a NASA Ames symposium on Mars and have my ticket for her on-stage interview as part of the City Arts & Lectures series in San Francisco, . If you're going to be anywhere near San Francisco on that day, I highly recommend joining me. She's wonderful in person!
