I live near Davis, California (but not too near, thankevvens) - which you may know as a leader in many things organic and bicycleish, mostly in being uber-green long before it became fashionable. It's the sort of town where the U students drag out their eddication as long as they can, then try to find jobs in local companies so they can keep wearing their alum sweatshirts unto the end of time. (I worked in two such companies there. Talk about tedious.) Anyway, over in my suburban part of the world, I spotted a vehicle with two big magnetic signs on it for DavisElectricCars.com (go look it up if you like - they sell itsy-bitsy electric cars and scooters, and I'm sure they are a big hit in Davis). The vehicle bearing the signs was a Ford Excursion - you know, the one that's just a step down from a Ford Pangaea. The blonde soccer mommy, all by her lonesome, was loading two grocery bags into its cavernous recesses. I blinked many times before driving on. |

That's really funny, but I'll wager its not the only place in California where such an incongruity can be spotted. My close friend and colleague for the past 20 years, Dr. Celeste Jarvis, did her undergraduate work at UC-Davis and speaks fondly of the university and the area. However, upon graduation she made her way across the country to Penn State, where she earned her Ph.D. and has been an East Coaster like me ever since. Northern California (and the Central Coast and SC and the desert) are all beautiful areas that I've enjoyed visiting several times. |

Actually... if you remember the pocket phones in the opening chapter of Space Cadet, I think you have to concede that Heinlein got the nuances almost dead-bang right. (After his earlier miss with the phones in Waldo...) As for traffic hazard, it's subtle, but remember Bill using "coming in for a landing" as an excuse to chase someone off the phone in Farmer in the Sky. |
