Some of you may or may not know that I am currently on the board of the Heinlein Society. I am the only board member that regularly checks the NexusForum, and my usage can vary widely as I remember to check. Since it is based on phpBB there's not a lot of customizing that can be done to it, but I am interested in how regular OR casual users use it-- should there be new categories, or are things pretty well set? The Society maintains a Twitter account and Facebook page as well. If you are a paid member of the Society we also send out an email newsletter about every two months to the email address we have on file and major announcements are also posted to the Society's website with a "News" tag. I realize that some of you choose to NOT be involved with Social media. I respect that. I'm just trying to figure out what place the Nexus is maintaining. It's not going anywhere! |

I agree: the categories are fine. I won't tweet. And I'm a member of Facebook simply because of convenience for signing into various other things. I have no personal information there. Several years ago I had a very bad experience with Facebook which I don't care to repeat. I check this NexusForum on an average of twice a week. And I wish it were more active. Please keep it going! |

I check it daily, hoping for some new tidbit of Heinleinia to appear, though I almost never have anything to post. The categories are fine for me. I mourn the diminishment of activity. Heinlein has been a significant influence on my life for fully 60 years. I have the main poster from my Virginia Edition lovingly framed and hung in my cube at work. |

Someone arriving at the main page for the first time will see most-recent-post dates of 2016 or earlier, as half of them currently are, and may not stick around for that reason alone. So I would start culling categories with no recent activity, placing the contents in a new Archive category. That said, I don't know that the forum is "useful" as such, although from my perspective it once was useful as a means of sharing observations about the tortuous production of the Virginia Edition (2005-2012). |

Dan, you got a poster with your VE? Wonder what I did wrong! I don't think anything needs to change with the forum. It's perfectly useful as it is: a record of conversations past and present. A time capsule of sorts. Like Tom, I come to browse old conversations, just not as often. I like it. I can eavesdrop even though I wasn't here at the time, and if moved to, comment. And sometimes, like conversations with old friends, they might just pick up again where they left off despite, the intervening years. |

To continue off-topic: The "overview" poster is what the first 12 or 13 volumes of the original VE would have looked like on a bookshelf, had Meisha Merlin not gone belly-up in early 2007. That is, their volumes came with slipcases and dust jackets, both of which had a slice of this color artwork on their spines; anyone who owns the six Meisha Merlin volumes will therefore see the left-hand ~40% of this poster when the books are in volume order. Donato Giancola was credited for this artwork in the Meisha Merlin volumes. A different artist, Steve Hickman, is erroneously credited at the first link. (Hickman did create the additional set of posters seen at the other link.) Donato's commission would have ultimately consisted of four horizontal posters to encompass the 46 volumes, had that version of the VE been completed. |
