Post subject:  Tim Hildebrandt Pencil Drawing
About 15 years ago, I purchased what was purported to be a Tim Hildebrandt (co-creater of the famous Star Wars poster) original pencil drawing. Supposedly it was drawn at a trade show in the early to mid 1970's. The image itself is of a viking type winged flying ship above an alien landscape. The drawing was inscribed "to dick" and signed by the artist. Was their a sci-fi/fantasy worldcon etc in Toronto during this time ? Supposedly this is when and where this was created. Got it cheap so if it's not authentic...... :) no big deal..... just wondering what I actually have here

Thanks for the info Bill ! The drawing style and subject matter closely resembles known pieces by the Hildebrandt Brothers- while my demise is not eminent, i wanted my sons/heirs to know what they're holding and some basic info about it. Your Torcon 2 info allows me to date this drawing. Wow ! it's almost 40 years old.

It's value? Well, like anything, it's worth what someone will pay for it...... Since Tim Hildebrandt passed on a few years back, I imagine it's value jumped beyond the $20 I paid for it in 2000. I'll certainly reference Ebay etc and hopefully arrive at an approximate value for this unique piece of art. I'd hazard perhaps a couple hundred bucks- I may be wrong - wouldn't be the first time ;)

An interesting sidebar (while it doesn't apply to my particular work) is that Tim and Greg Hildebrandt collaborated on large pieces with one brothers style indistinguishable from the other's ! I find this amazing ! Not even a small variance between them. Their "hands" were identical. BTW Greg and Tim were twin brothers :)

You might be able to get it authenticated in some way; it would be worth a little time and effort and enhance the value (if and when).

A few years back I picked up a large pencil work by Chuck Jones, a rendering of the classic Bugs and Daffy at the piano. I got it relatively cheap because it had no good authentication or provenance, except that the seller thought it had been used for a magazine cover.

Item in hand, I did a little research and found the magazine (actually a tabloid newspaper) that had been published for a while by Jim Steranko. Not only did the cover provide authentication, but an inside blurb described the why and wherefore, and a response from Steranko (a nice bit in itself) sealed the deal. I now have it framed with a nearly identical sericel of the same scene, and the magazine is framed separately. That bit of legwork almost certainly increased the potential sales value of the item - not that I'd sell a Chuck Jones original while I'm still around to admire it. :)

a brief google search turned up many tim hildebrandt autographs which are very similar to the one on my drawing- appears i have an authentic pencil drawing here..... time to visit ebay and see what the market value is :) am attaching a note to my heirs on the back of the frame with the info i find

and a further search reveals that similar size (11x17) drawings are going for $1-5K. mine would tend towards the lower end methinks, still ............ :)
