Although I've been around this board a long time I mostly feel like (acknowledge) that I am an amateur in comparison to many others here. I leave it to the board to see if the following is too far afield from Heinlein to be of interest. I did use the board search feature several times to see if the topics have been covered before - but did not find a match. Lurton Blassingames's NY Times Obituary - apparently he died within a month of Heinlein - April 7 Thu vs May 8,88. http://www.nytimes.com/1988/04/13/obitu ... agent.html Lurton Blassingames's archives of correspondence - noting there are 14 folders of Heinlein correspondence noted and marked 'closed'. Also one folder for Virginia. http://archiveswest.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv82437 Lurton's brother. Although it doesn't say so in the article note that his mothers full name is Maude Lurton Blassingame - not so common a name as to have two Lurton Blassingames and not have them be related. Author of 600 short stories, dozens of juveniles novels. Wrote horror pulps for "Terror Tales" "Weird Menace" and "Dime Mystery". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wyatt_Rainey_Blassingame A list of some of Wyatt's books - I like titles like "Mistress of Terror" and "Underwater Warriors" https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=dp_byline_ ... evancerank More detail about Wyatt in book dedicated to history of a particular pulp...and confirmation of sibling relationship to Lurton. https://books.google.com/books?id=PrKSH ... me&f=false |

Also.... Lurton's, son also named Lurton, receiving a Life Service Award in 2015. http://www.ci.oshkosh.wi.us/senior_serv ... st2015.pdf It occurs to me that it might be interesting for the more scholarly types here to talk with Lurton Jr (if it has not already endlessly been done) given the amount of correspondence his father and Heinlein had. I certainly have stories and facts about my own father's business partners and clients. He might too. ...and I also realize this might all be old well known info. Forgive me if it is. |

I can't find an answer to this question anywhere, so I ask the folks here. My grandfather was the midwest book buyer for A. C. McClurg, a large book wholesaling firm in Chicago. One of his buddies was a fellow named Bing Blassingame, a literary agent. All I remember is that Bing would come to town several times per year, and he and my grandfather would go out to paint the town red. Once they got thrown out of a rather tony restaurant when Bing stood up on a table and gave an impassioned speech as to why the country needed a good five-cent brassiere. I was much too young to understand about Bing: there was a 60+ year age differential. I wonder if there was some sort of relationship between Lurton and Bing. |
