Post Alphas
On the other hand, a few eps into the second season of Alphas, and I find myself more and more intrigued and impressed.

The first season seemed very formulaic and derivative - X-Men Lite, stealing from the half dozen predecessor shows with a basic concept of "group of people with Strange Powers Do Good." (Misfits of Science, I'm looking at YOU. Heroes, go away.)

But then it started to twist. And twist. And flat out pop the rivets. It's just dawning on me how many complex character arcs are underway - few of them predictable and not all of them in good directions. I think so far we've seen only the prelude, and the real story has not yet begun.

Please, please, let there be a JMS-grade writer behind it all with a master plan where every twist will eventually mean something... and not anything we can guess. And don't lose the thread halfway through. (Battlestar Galactica II, I'm looking at YOU.)

I just recently discovered the series, and I agree. The shows are well done
and the characters interesting. Hopefully the writers can keep the momentum
going. :P

The first season was not great but strong enough to keep me watching and it did get better as it went on. I agree with Jim that the second season has started even stronger and some of the twists have surprised me, in a good way. Jim mentioned a few shows that dropped the ball part way through their run. We've seen others, like The Event and Flash Forward, that had interesting concepts but never really succeeded in making the show interesting. So far, Alphas has not failed in that way and I'd also like to see it be more like Babylon 5 than Nu-BSG in follow through to an ending that makes sense (but not for a few seasons yet).

The only disappointment so far was when _____ went off the roof. From the setup, and the extreme degree they are throwing twists, I really thought (hoped) they would go as far as killing off a main character. The rescue was an unwelcome "Oh, of course."
