SFFNet Shutting Down After 20 Years :(
FYI, in case any of you wanted to wander over and say goodbye, SFFNet (
http://www.sff.net) is shutting down after 20 years. It opened in August 1996. I gather that it hasn't been paying for itself for a couple of years and the financial burden got to be too much.
SFFNet was one of two communities that grew out of the old GENie SFRT, a pre-internet online community on the old General Electric Network for Information Exchange. I've been an SF reader since elementary school, and a Heinlein fan since high school, but it was on GENie that I got hooked into SF fandom and found out about cons.
It was on SFFNet that I learned about this forum; I think Justin posted there. So blame him! <VBVEG>
A lot of the old SF fandom resources are shutting down, as people move to Facebook (sigh) and social media. Personally I prefer newsgroups and/or forums with actual topics, but that doesn't seem to be the fashion these days.
