Post 1984 and Beyond (G. 151)
In 1963 Heinlein was involved in a group of 12 sf writers for a Playboy piece about the future. While RAH's part in this was not large, I thought this group might find it interesting that a film (of sorts) seems to have been made about it.

First I've heard of it. From the description, I don't see how it could ever be on something like Netflix. It appears to be a larger artwork of which film is just a piece, and three screens at that (simultaneously? Dunno). It may not be editable into something Netflix-able.

I've made a stab at contacting Byrne thru one of his galleries. We'll see if anything comes of it --since the gallery would be primarily interested in leasing the work to other galleries for display, they would not necessarily be all that interested in pursuing my inquiry or passing it on to Byrne himself.

And even if they do, I don't have a lot of hope that it will come to much so far as producing a way for a popular non-gallery going audience to experience the work. I did wave my credentials and contacts a little bit, so hopefully that might at least merit a response, however unsatisfactory as to ultimate results.

My understanding is that in its current form, it is three separate channels of video, twenty photographs, and probably a bunch of post-modernist brick-a-brack filling up the spaces in between. Even were the artist so inclined, trying to turn that lot into single channel video (aka DVD) in a pleasing way that maintains the original artistic intent is surely a non-trivial undertaking.

Well, anyway, we'll see.

I would truly be interested in the original body of discussion that took place between these 12 writers !! sorry, but bryne extrapolating on what they really meant and adding his own artistic slant, well I believe the panelists' thoughts would become convoluted to bryne's purposes. I wonder if Playboy has the text of this meeeting archived somewhere - not the polished finished feature story but the nuts and bolts of the discussion and the source material of this article- thinking it would be a greater object of interest than bryne's "art" !! IMHO of course ;)

What I'd like to see is the original, unedited ms.

I've read the Playboy issues, and it's interesting, but I think there is much that did not make it in.

Like Robert, I believe the original unedited manuscript would be of utmost interest. The interchange between these luminary writers ? Perhaps priceless.

Go for it geo !! no poorer the pauper

They are available to any legitimate scholar, for the most part -- just have to pay copying fees.

If they say no to you, I will write and ask with the phud on....

You would be violating their ownership of the papers.

You are limited to the fair use doctrine, unless they grant you permission to post, which may involve fees.

You will, of course, mail me a copy as payment for this advice....

Perhaps I should be culling the Heinlein end for Boucher papers to offer in trade re "rights" (with HPT permission for the scheme, of course). Hmm.
