For god's sake, people, go see this while you can - it's in as wide a release as it's going to get, which means you'll have to go over to the indie-film art house in your city to see it.

Go. Now. Go see it. Now. I mean now.

This is an absolutely staggering addition to the short list of truly classic sf movies - and I'm talking The Day the Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet, 2001 and Blade Runner for starters. Written and directed by Duncan Jones (aka Zowie Bowie, David Jones'... er, Bowie's son) and essentially a one-man show starring Sam Rockwell in what is sure to be his breakout role... it is the absolute antithesis of the tidal wave of mega-CGI crap overwhelming screens this summer.

Small, spare, smooth and seamless from beginning to end, and if there's a lick of CGI in it I don't know where it is. Wonderfully realistic lunar travel sequences that would fit right into 2001.

I can't say much more about it without spoiling things, as the plot evolves quickly - but I can say that it does continue to evolve past the 'big revelation' and you soon realize that what would be the climax in a lesser film is merely the end of the first act.

Very intense in spots and played to a very intelligent and perceptive audience. Bring your brain. Bring extra applause. And get in line for whatever film Rockwell is signed for after this date.

Hmm. I wasn't nearly as enthusiastic about it as you are. I really wanted it to be superb; I've been longing for a good, believable scifi movie since Serenity. But "bring your brain"? I have three words for you: Earth-normal gravity.

I really do hope this is the breakout role for Sam Rockwell. He did a terrific job with what I consider to be less than stellar material. Still, I want this movie to succeed enough that producers and directors greenlight more good scifi.
