Iwas just wondering a few things, I signed up to join the society and paid my dues back in September but I didn't get any confirmation or anything that I have been accepted to the Heinlein Society. So I had a few questions:

First, did all my information come through, and am I officially a member?

Secondly, what does becoming a member really mean? I joined because I love RAH and wanted to be a part of a group of people that love his work as much as I do. I wanted to support and be part of a group carrying on his legacy of paying it forward. And I wanted to be able to say "I am a member of The Heinlein Society." But beyond that I had not thought much about it, is there a newsletter? Is this forum how we communicate and keep in touch? Are there things to get involved with?

I look forward to getting to know anyone I can here.

I'm a member. Today I got an email with the URL of the 2012 newsletter, and I've been invited to the annual meeting every year. Other than that, the money goes to support Heinlein-related activities, including the society web site and this forum. There are some good people around here. :-) It's not one of those deals with monthly magazines or lots of local chapters, though.

Thats what I was expecting. I read through the newletter online, some great stuff in there. I attend a convention in LA every year called Gallifreyone, its a Doctor Who convention, and they have a blood drive. I have never participated but I am feeling inspired.

What I am wondering if I am on the roster of members though. I did not get any confirmation that I was a member when I did the application and paid. Then I did not get an email with a link to the newsletter I followed the facebook link to it.

Is there anywere posted a membership roster so I could check?

If there is, I haven't seen it. However, you should be able to contact the society off of the contacts page.

There are a whole bunch of contacts there, including email addresses. Haven't tried them myself, but they should work. :-)

The following might sound like a transparent shill for the society, but perhaps the fact that I don't hold any affiliation with it beyond grassroots member status may help. The best value of the society, by far, is in taking part in activities and doing things, like organizing blood drives, distributing books, dressing up the web site. In that mode, THS is a worthy use of time. It is not something that yields a large payoff if you are simply passive and want it to entertain you.

Although the Centennial was not a THS activity (that statement is riddled with irony in a way that only a few appreciate), the principle still held in 2007 when I and others put on that event. Doing something in Heinlein's name was far more fulfilling than decades of taking in any form. It was one of the highlights of my life. There are still opportunities to contribute to Heinlein's legacy, either in ways that other people have already identified, or in ways yet to be discovered. I believe that the best if not only value of the society lies in providing a place for people who want to contribute effort to socialize and organize.
