Post Top Secret Tourism
That's the title of a book that is like a Fodor's of the dark corners of the US government. State by state he enumerates various facilities that are performing work that is classified. Unlike some reviewers, I enjoyed the snarky language he employed; it goes right along with the theme of the book. (Example, after describing how much nerve gas is stored at a particular location: "You might want to stay upwind.")

I was also surprised how many reviewers said that there was nothing new in the book. Well, duh, if you're a serious aficionado of secret stuff, you're going to hit a line pretty soon that no one can cross in a mass-market publication. I learned some things and I was entertained.

It was interesting to learn just how many places there are where your mere presence on a public road will get you unwelcome attention and if you stop, arrested. It was also refreshing to read the author's preemptive strike on people complaining that this gives information to evildoers: "Get real. They already know this stuff." No hand-wringing there.

I wonder if all of the "closed cities" of the USSR are open again.

I was thinking principally of Vladivostok, and of the closed-off area of the 1958 nuclear disaster in the Urals.

Poor attempt at humor. I note that there are regular tours to the Chernobyl area, including Pripyat and the reactor site. (Okay, that's not in Russia, but...)
