Caught the movie this weekend, and enjoyed it as a film, but as usual, the book is infinitely better, in my opinion. I don't think you can ever catch all the nuances of a book in a film, although you can do other things. I've never found them to be equal, even when, as in this case, I think the film did substantial justice to the book in most respects. I was unsurprised to find the author claiming one of his favorite books of all time to be RAH's Tunnel in the Sky. I certainly enjoyed the sense of humor expressed by the main character in both mediums. I expect I would ( and do ) use humor as a defense mechanism in that sort of life and death situation. |
