My husband and I will be on a long road trip this summer that will take us through Kansas City. What Heinlein-related places are worth a visit? :)

If you can swing the drive by Butler, MO south of KC you can visit the Butler Public Library with its little bit of Heinlein history and also drive by his birthplace home (which is now a private residence). In K.C. proper only Swope Park really comes to mind.

I'd thought of taking a side trip to Butler, and we might do it. The local historical society and museum in Butler hasn't got a great deal about Heinlein himself, but has lots about the Osage tribe and archaeology in that part of Missouri, so Joe would love it. Swope Park, definitely. :)

And Kansas City barbecue! But that isn't specific to Heinlein. Anybody who has tastebuds and isn't completely vegan loves the stuff.

If you're going through Kansa City this summer I suggest you make a map of every public place with air conditioning.

Kansas City was OK when we were there. Had to bypass Butler because of severe weather warnings in southwestern Missouri and southeastern Kansas, the type of severe weather that means tornados in that part of the world. <wry grin> We'll try to catch it on the way back.

Hannibal, Missouri, on the other hand, has been a steam bath. <sigh> I still love it, but I forgot how it felt in Houston at this time of year when we visited relatives when I was a kid. and now I'm remembering.
