Post "Wise old man"
Heritage of Heinlein describes the analysis of Stranger by Algis Budrys and Heinlein's lengthy reaction to it. One riposte was to Budrys's comment about Heinlein always having a "wise old man." RAH replied that this was true, but he hoped that no one ever discovered the reason why, and that fortunately Budrys's guess was off by a mile.

Is this mystery solved, i.e., do we know Heinlein's reason? Did he ever reveal it or acknowledge someone guessed right?

If he did, I never heard about it. What *was* Budry's guess?
