So what's everyone going to be doing this July 7? Any plans to commemorate the birthday or the anniversary of the Centennial? |

I think I'll have a single malt scotch and toast the master. There's another event that I hope will happen that day as well, but I don't want to discuss it unless or until it actually does occur. |

Not planning anything special for the birthdate, but in the past year I have dug more deeply into Heinlein and his work-- especially reading correspondence from the newly-obtainable archives. For the conference I volunteered for a panel on "Heinlein and the Bomb," never having considered the topic more than casually before. This got me talking to Tad Daley, re-reading "Solution Unsatisfactory," and examining RAH's unsold Bomb articles. And I became interested in Heinlein's urge to take action to prevent nuclear war. Following up on this through correspondence and books, I have learned a lot about the seeds of the Cold War. I have found a lot of unpublished information about Bob Cornog, Heinlein's close friend at Los Alamos. I know more about the origins of "SU" and other "atomic" stories. An exchange between Heinlein and Campbell about antimatter led me down a side road, and I have an article coming out on how Jack Williamson came to write his Seetee stories. I have yet to write up my space suit research, though I have given my talk a few times. Real Soon Now. The archives didn't add a lot to the facts I have, somewhat frustratingly. So I am still thinking and reading and writing about Heinlein, a year later. The Centennial had a lot to do with this. Let's see what Year 102 brings. |
