This is the almost complete one, using footage found from a 16mm print in Buenos Aires in 2008. I have to say, the movie finally makes sense. Weird film, more of a biblical tale than an sf film, which surprised me. It is available for streaming on Netflix - -which, by the way, has a new option for just access to streaming movies for $7.99 a month, and in exchange for not sending out movies for thirty days after the release date, the movie studios have given them more of their film libraries for streaming. Has anybody seen the restored film? And if so, what did you think? |

Audrey gifted me with tickets to the showing at the Castro, with live orchestra, and an evening in SF - my Father's Day gift this year. I am a Metropolis nut, have seen every iteration and restoration, and this probably final version simply blew me away. The accompaniment was the modern "junk" orchestra score, which was announced after the showing as having been selected by Kino to include on the official release (along with the performance of the original score). If you didn't watch it with this score (the orchestra name escapes me at the moment), rewatch when you can. The power of the last scenes combined with the thunder of the junk score was almost literally overwhelming. I would have a Blu-Ray in my hands right this minute were I not under grumble snarl holiday buy-oneself-pretty-things moratorium. |

There does seem to be only one final scene missing, the fight scene between the father and Rotwang. It is a remarkably compelling film now. Again, still think it's more of a morality tale than seminal SF, but the imagery is indelible. Wonder if the steampunk people have grabbed hold of it yet. Planning to watch Frau im Monde soon. |

As it did for me. I now find it a film worth watching as more than a curio piece. Netflix also has Aelita available for instant viewing; I keep meaning to watch that one. They also have one of the Houdini serials, but you have to send for it. |

I just watched "The Divorcee" and "A Free Soul" from that collection. I can see why they were pre-code, but is it just me, or is Norma Shearer a really, really bad actress? Except, oddly enough, in the scenes with Clark Gable, where she is actually interesting. |
