I think this is the right place for this thread. Everyone here has faced or will face the day when there are no more new Heinlein books and stories to read, because you've already explored them all. Most of us have some Heinlein we read over and over through the years. Eventually we start looking for something else that reaches us in similar fashion. It might be classified as science fiction, fantasy, magic realism, adventure or something else, but it either looks at the same issues or looks at other issues in a similar fashion.
My example is from Time Enough for Love. The theme here has always seemed to me to be: If you had had thousands of years in which to explore life, what would you find was still important to you (...and why aren't you focusing on that now)?
I have found a couple of other authors who have written at least one book based on that same question. Even though their genres and styles are not at all like Heinlein, the theme connects the work.
One is Tom Robbin's novel Jitterbug Perfume. Robbin's has a completely different sensibility and sense of humor than Heinlein (not to mention his 'skid'), but he has tackled this same meaty topic and done something with it that I would be poorer for not knowing.
Another is -- please don't groan -- Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. Her main character is a human forced into eternal existence and trying to make that existence meaningful to himself, (even while denying his sense of guilt). There is one book in the series that can be read as a stand-alone and echoes not only Time Enough for Love but Job in that it involves a tour of heaven with the devil. The title is Memnoch the Devil and is in my opinion worth a read if you liked TEFL and Job and have run out of new Heinlein.
Does anyone else have any more books to recommend and want to share the connection they see to Heinlein?

David R. Palmer's "Emergence" reads to me to be very like a Heinlein story. I believe I expressed this in the old Nitro. Its out of print but I believe that its being optioned as a movie so it should come back into print soon. Should be easily locatable on the 2nd hand market.

First, thanks for your enduring loyalty. It's been 25 years since my last book.

Some of you will be pleased to learn that "Tracking," the sequel to "Emergence," is being serialized in three parts by Analog SF magazine, commencing with the July/August double issue, due out toward the end of this month. Inchoate talk are also underway with Wormhole Press to bring "Tracking" out as a hardcover and paperback sometime next year.

I totally agree on "Emergence". I don't think I could name a more Heinleinesque story not written by Heinlein.
