Post Sunshine
I'm totally unsophisticated when it comes to reviewing anything (I can't get "counterpoint the surrealism of the underlying metaphor" out of my head and keep wondering whether it actually means anything), but I do know what I like, and while I don't as a rule like moody pieces full of death, I have to give a nod to "Sunshine" before my run-on sentence collapses under its own weight.

Sure, it's full of numerous scientific errors, several plot holes, and the cutting is literally stroboscopic in places, but it's thoughtfully executed enough to make the occasional veering into sci-fi cliché forgivable.

The Earth is freezing because the Sun is going dim. A mission has been launched to drop a bomb into the Sun to relight it. Trust me, it comes across better than it sounds.

At times I didn't know if I was watching straight sci-fi, gothic horror à la Alien, or an homage to 2001 and/or Silent Running and/or Deep Impact. Though I would say it pulls off all of those things quite well. I'd put it in a class with Moon. It deserves a place of pride in the canon of classic sci-fi movies.

This could have been a good film, the idea was good, but execution was IMHO poor. Huge plot holes, and as previously said some very odd cuts!

A little bit 2010 (when they are travelling on the Russian Ship), and more than a few bits lifted from other films. The captain of the first ships monologue was very much Brando from Apocalypse Now!

It was IMHO ok, but I wont bother watching it again. 5/10
