I see that The Heinlein Society on its home page refers to Destination Moon as "the classic science fiction movie based on the Robert Heinlein novel "Rocket Ship Galileo". To me, based is a fairly strong word, and I've always been a bit surprised when I see such a claim. Jim in RAH: A Reader's Companion under Rocket Ship Galileo says that the novel "loosely inspired" the screenplay; and that's about as far as I'd go. But also in a sub-heading, "Filmed: 1949 (as Destination Moon)." As I've said elsewhere, I think Rocket Ship Galileo has long been underappreciated. There are so many more-or-less First on the Moon stories (even by 1950) that the main resemblance between these two is that they're both by Heinlein. Aside from the basic proposition of First on the Moon, and Heinlein's realism, they're more dissimilar than similar. Comments? |

Thanks, guys! That really does clarify the history. But now I'm wondering what fresh, groundbreaking SF movies could be attached to titles like Moon Over Miami (original, 1941) or Galileo's Daughter (original, 1999). Ah, wait ... better not tell Hollywood. |

I am very interested in finding further information on the mysterious Moon Ballet I recently discovered. I have now put a summary of what I know at . I include pictures of the three dancers and of Double-Breasted-Suit Guy, in hope that someone can identify them. If you know anybody who can dig up clues about dancers in Hollywood in 1949-- say scholars or buffs of dance, or movie musicals-- please urge them to take a look at my site. Perhaps we can uncover more of this hidden story. |

The photographer, Allan Grant, only died last year (Feb 2008). His obits said he lived in Brentwood, CA and his widow's name is Karin("In addition to his wife, Grant is survived by daughter Kristina, sons Richard and Ronald and three grandchildren."). Perhaps you could contact her, and she could provide a lead. |

I wonder if this is any connection: http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0040725/. I searched for "dance" in films from 1948 to 1951 and this popped out. It was filmed in England in 1948, but had the same distributor (Eagle-Lion) as DM. I don't see an obviously Asian name among the dancers but there is mention of flying dancers and objects. The blonde dancer bears a striking resemblance to Moira Shearer, but I can't make the match positive. Ditto, double-breasted suit guy looks a lot like Emeric Pressburger. OTOH, I've spent a lot of time trying to identify bit actors by photo comparison and it's easy to go wrong. (One absolutely positive match I had was of either the same guy or him and his clone... and the actor himself got in touch to say I was wrong!) The date of these on the original site is January 1, 1950 - I wonder if that's a bogus date (e.g. "some time in 1950") or if they really shot on New Year's Day... which would make sense as filming would likely have been suspended that day. This is fascinating. Perhaps a check of LIFE magazines in 1950 is in order - even a one-page article might explain things. (Hmm, a glance at all the 1950 covers doesn't show anything obvious.) |

I meant bogus only in the sense that the database required a date but an exact shooting date was not available. I am surprised that the set was left standing so long in these days where teardown begins about five minutes after "That's a wrap!" so that the next remake of a remake can get started. |

Actually, Bill, what the movie says is "Based on a novel by Robert A. Heinlein" -- just watched the opening creds the other day. The novel goes unmentioned, perhaps for all the reasons you mentioned -- but also because DM is a movie for adults, and RSG is a book for boys. Robert |

Has anyone else here (other than our host) read the "Destination Moon" novella? The differences between it and the film script should be of interest, but (sadly) aren't... I suppose he simply needed a quick-and-easy paycheck at the time, because it's got to be the least inspired, most schematic writing ever published under Heinlein's name - just my opinion, of course. |

Destination Moon was adapted into a comic book a couple of times. Fawcett did a one-shot in 1950 (script by Otto Binder, art by Dick Rockwell and Sam Burlokoff), which was reprinted by Charlton in 1956 and again in 1958. DC Comics did a shorter version in Strange Adventures in 1950 (script by Gardner Fox and art by Curt Swan and John Fischetti). Did Heinlein know about these? Was he involved in them? Did he condone them? Get paid for them? Care? |
