Burton's Alice in Wonderland
(Typing that subject line made me wonder about the intersection of R.F. Burton and Lewis Carroll... but it's probably better not to go there. I mean Tim Burton, of course.)
I have followed the development of this movie fairly closely, but it was not until I saw the first full trailer last weekend that I realized it's a sequel to the original story - Alice is 19 and returning to Wonderland.
Burton has some interesting observations about the original story, in that Alice is just an observer encountering one set piece after another. He wanted to make a Wonderland movie but bring Alice more into the story - hence the shift of time and perspective. I'm looking forward to it but it's hard to tell whether it will be artistically successful.
Many who have seen extended footage from it have commented that it may be the first film version to capture the giddy, off-kilter and frighteningly strange world of the book, rather than turning it into a kind of kiddy Candyland. The trailer footage I've seen certainly upholds those comments.

Hmm. Alice returns to Wonderland after bulking up in the gym and accompanied by a squad of Marines?
"Off with your head, b*tch," snarled Alice.

You're thinking of Aliens in Wonderland.
"Take off and nuke the place from orbit," said the Mad Hatter. "It's the only way to be ab-so-lutely sure!" said the March Hare. "And we must use the very best butter... if you know what I mean." "Butter... butter... butter..." mumbled the Dormouse, his tiny finger caressing the bomb release lever.

Re: Burton's Alice in Wonderland
I'm not a big Tim Burton fan( though I liked Ed Wood; several fine performances there.) Alice, by this time in my life, bores me to tears( okay, to sarcasm.) My fave Alice scene in recent cinema was in Where the Truth Lies in which Colin Firth slips Alison Lohman some LSD and brings out a young woman dressed like a Victorian illustration to sing 'White Rabbit' in counterpoint with the music in the background, which is some vintage Mahavishnu fusion. 'I know you! You're Alice.' The young women embrace and... I do have a strong yen for the actress who plays the title role in the upcoming flick, having caught her act as Chaya in Defiance.
All in all: I'll pass.

Re: Burton's Alice in Wonderland
ok promised to take my teens to the movies and this was it !!
thought it was a mite boring to begin with but it did pick up-warning: i was never a fan of the original Alice but......
well as in any tim burton movie it's best seen in an altered state (no trips back to the 60's for me)- his imagery seems to point thats where he gets his ideas- something directly out of Dr Timothy Leary's dreams !
all in all, i'd give it 2 stars- entertaining in spots- the high point for me was johnny depp as the mad hatter- convincingly mad, off beat charactor- the bulbous headed queen? A hoot ! these two carried the whole movie!
