Perhaps there is a better place for this thread, but I am looking for recommendations for a Complete Works of Twain, or some combination of sets that amounts to the complete works. I would prefer hardback books to ebooks. The sets I've seen referred to as 'complete' are, actually, only unabridged.
In rereading the fantasies and the Off the Main Sequence collections recently, I realized I can no longer put off a thorough reading of my favorite author's favorite authors.
Any and all helpful responses are appreciated.

Running Press did two volumes years ago - you should still be able to find secondhand copies. As far as I can tell, they contain all the Twain worth having on the shelf. Even the editor admits, in the foreword to the second volume, that there will not be a third because he's run out of first-rate work to include.

Twain wrote a vast amount of stuff, a very large proportion of which is only of interest to the very dedicated reader or scholar. I suspect by "complete" you mean all of the good stuff.

The RP books have the downside of being very fat volumes, a bit hard to manage for casual reading. OTOH, there's a lovely companion volume of everything Poe wrote.

My grandmother, before she passed away in 1980, passed along to me a leather-bound single-volume "Complete Works of Mark Twain" published in 1923. It is printed on onion-skin paper, and, while I don't think it actually contains his "complete works," does contain an astounding amount of material.

The Library of America edition is extremely good and at last has I think all of the important and many of the lesser works -- although, as pointed out above, is not "complete". The volumes can be purchased individually or as a set.

If it doesn't contain "The Literary Offenses of James Fenimore Cooper," it is neither complete nor adequate for my library.

"For he was a Cooper Indian, too" is a common phrase around here.

My grandfather died leaving a 26 volume set from Harper and Brothers. I grabbed them when nobody was looking, and made the irrevocable mistake of reading them during my teenage years. I urge you to protect your children from such disaster, rather encourage them to become productive citizens and responsible adults. I understand that a new complete scholarly edition of the autobiography is forthcoming. I fear for the future.
