I've learned that a Destination Moon space suit was auctioned last year:

As part of promotions for the movie, such suits were shipped to local theaters and used in publicity stunts. This one included air tanks, metal helmet, and belt-mounted control panel. I have not investigated how much it sold for.

It might be fun to start collecting a list of films and TV episodes in which the DM suits appeared; they were recycled endlessly for decades. Might even still be in use somewhere.

In other news, a nice Flickr picture has turned up showing three sisters posing before the giant rocket advertising the movie at the RKO Palace in New York:

I miss the era of giant custom marquees for big movies.

The auction house, "Profiles in History", has a website with the catalog (more or less the same as the Liveauctioneers link that Bill posted), and the Prices Realized for the auction. It went for $8,000 (not clear if this included buyer's premiums or not).

The same auction included Ferris Bueller's leather jacket ($35k), a Hunter/Killer tank model from the first Terminator movie ($55k), a Frankenstein (1931) one-sheet poster ($180k), Bela Lugosi's Dracula ring from Forry Ackerman's collection ($40k), an original "creature from the black lagoon" costume mask from Revenge of the Creature (1955) ($70K), and Rick Deckard's gun from Blade Runner ($225k).
