Post Aubrey de Grey
Hello.

I was wondering if anyone has seen Aubrey de Grey speak about his SENS approach to combatting aging. While the reality is still some years away, his approach sounds remarkably like the "sheaf of therapies" Heinlein posited as the alternative to the Families' line breeding solution.

Have not seen him, but read his book Ending Aging; and the book Long for this World is mostly about him. Fascinating guy. More power to 'im.

The telomere is the ultimate limit to cellular longevity. If one does away with it, one often gets...cancer. Telomerase is present in some cells, and rebuilds the telomere. I don't see any mention of this in de Gray's approach of essentially detoxing a person. What is the age of the oldest known person, wasn't it like 160 or something? :)

122 I think.

A book I recently read - Merchants of Immortality - has some detail about how telomeres are not the be-all and end-all of longevity. De Grey's 7-step plan for longevity is compelling, to me at least. Telomeres are not his biggest problem. Cancer is. His remediation strategy for that is ... startling.
