Post Welcome
Welcome to the Nexus Archive of Heinlein biography comments. The principal author site for the Heinlein biography, http://www.whpattersonjr.com, feeds into this subforum, and it is open for all Nexus participants, as well. Here, I'm "at home," and I go by "Bill."

You do not need to be a registered Nexus user in order to read and post to this forum, but you are earnestly urged to register with the Nexus and sample its Forums and Wiki (you must register to use the rest of the Nexus). It's the single best representation of the Heinlein community on the net.

This subforum is different from the rest of the Nexus Forums: it is open and therefore moderated, and Geo Rule and I will monitor the content and use our Godlike Moderator Powers to reject unceremoniously and delete any post we deem, in our Godlike Moderator Discretion to be obstreperous, troll-ish, spam-like or splorge-like or otherwise Displeasing in the Sight of Civil Discourse. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Selah.

All topics and posts are welcome, but attention is especially directed to a sticky thread "I Remember When Robert . . . " (sticky" means it will always stay on top of the list of topics, which otherwise tend to have the most recent threads on top of the list). This is the place for anecdotes, reminiscences, or even "that reminds me of . . ." I intend to use this thread as a source for revising the biography if and when second editions come around. Welcome to history, man!

If you are coming to this archive from whpattersonjr.com, a special welcome -- and I again urge you to visit the rest of the Nexus'a forums and the wiki. You'll find a fascinating and entertaining set of discussions -- almost the last such collection left. It's a resource I use every day and I urge you bookmark the Nexus and to look in often and contribute, as well.

Cheers,
Bill Patterson

Thanks for the feedback, Dan; all three are known issues (This sub-forum didn't exist before today to link to, for instance). Of course anyone going to whpjr.com from here (which is the only place it has been advertised as existing) isn't really the target audience for whpjr.com anyway. The text box had a double paste in it of generic sample text to give Bill a sense of how big the box is (it is for his own occassional current status updates, and he hasn't entered his first one yet). Until this morning we were still talking about email address stuff.

"navy" seems to have come directly from Amazon's blurb that way. Whether that means it came directly from Tor that way, I don't know.

But I'd expect those issues you identified to get cleaned up soonish.

Edit: Ahh, I just noticed a certain author has Facebooked as well. So, okay, a little construction debris still around for early visitors to get that thrill of being amongst the adventuresome first.

It's not constructive, but I do have a question....will there be any east coast opportunities to get my copy autographed? I guess I do have an advantage that I am near Annapolis, and if you come anywhere you'll come here. ;)

The webmaster and the author both seemed pleased with the website now. Address nitpicks to the author, and if he feels them appropriate to address he can pass them on to the webgoddess.

Oh, btw, having noted that at least one early review was lamenting the lack of photos in Vol 1, Madam Online Archivist went to the Trust and got permission to put some period-relevant photos at whpattersonjr.com where I would expect they'll show up sooner rather than later.

How did that happen, Bill? Tor being parsimonious, or what?

Well, I don't have one to hand to say for sure, but presumably David Dyer-Bennett knows of what he speaks, and he said so. DDB is a noted pic-hound (we once had some unpleasantness over it, in fact), and I don't doubt he winced seriously over it.

I'm sad that it isn't coming out for a month, as I'm hoping to stop by and see you at Comic-Con this week. Would have been an excellent opportunity for getting a signature :)

Btw, Bill, are you going to create the "I Remember When Robert. . . " sticky thread you referenced?

Also, Deb did put some pictures up on the Biography Sources page at whpjr. No idea if there is any overlap at all with the pics actually in the biography.

Post Re: Welcome
Just heard today from Stacy Hague-Hill that they are today sending an advance copy to the Prize Trust and to me. Unfortunately it won't arrive in time to take one to Comic-Con, but there will be one of the uncorrected bound galley sets there (Bruce).

In theory I am also getting from Tor/MacMillan's PR department poster(s) and postcards to sign, but those haven't shown up in the mail yet, either. I think Robert and I are going to have to make a mad dash by my mail service on the way out of town tomorrow.

Stacy also pointed out that there is a second "reminiscence of RAH" now on the Tor site to accompany Brin's, this one by David Drake. http://torforge.wordpress.com/2010/07/1 ... /#comments
This is the first time I've ever seen anyone say the F&SF condensation of Starship Troopers wastheir first Heinlein. One, as they say, for the books, as it were.

The editor at NY Review of SF kindly provided me with a link to the review of the biography by Wessells -- and it's highly complimentary though a little strange, as he essentially summarizes Heinlein's life. I've asked, but I don't know that a link will be up, though, as NYRSF is a subscription magazine.

Post Re: Welcome
Forgot to mention that this issue of NYRSF also has a longish piece on Farnham's Freehold by Joe Sanders, who handles books and magazines for SFRA. Sanders seems aware of much of the more intelligent discussion of the book that's been going on for the last ten to fifteen years (possibly because he receives comp copies of the JOURNAL, though Jim Gifford's ARC is the only part of that conversation he cites. It's a scene-setting discussion piece, rather than a polemic, so there is no strong conclusionary argument, but it's a nice indication that at least some of the goals of the new Heinlein Studies is penetrating even unto the Hyperborean. I added it to my collection of critical material about Heinlein in the Retrieval Guide which they will never use at the UC Santa Cruz Archive.

The NYRSF web site seems to run out about a year ago, listing issue 249 (May 2009) but nothing newer. I'd be interested in seeing Sanders' essay if it can be sent my way.

Re: PDF pages here

Yes, I remember you raising the question in email - sorry, I have more cracks here than solid surface these days. You can either send me the PDFs and I'll park them somewhere you can link to, or I can set up an ftp folder you can poke and pull files from and link as you please.

You could also create a page on the wiki and poke files in there. I'm not certain how well it handles external links, though.
