Post Introduce Yourself
Although, I am familiar with a lot of the members of the Forum, there are some of you whom I do not know, and I know that there are some of you who do not anything about the rest of us. So, I thought that I would take this opportunity to have people post anything about themselves that they would care to.

As a way of starting off, there is a page about me on the Society's website. http://heinleinsociety.org/rahandme/wright.html

So, if you are a newbie or an old-time fan, please don't hesitate to chime in and help the rest of us get acquainted.

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
Alright, I'll jump in. I'm Catherine (Hampton) Jefferson. I've been an SF reader since I was eight and the elementary school librarian introduced me to Andre Norton. I've been a Heinlein fan since I was ten or eleven and happened on some Heinlein juvenalia. (I don't remember which was first, but "Farmer in the Sky" and "Podkayne of Mars" played significant parts in it.) In my late 20s I discovered SF fandom, went to my first con, and found my way to other things, including (finally!) this forum. :-) My slightly outdated home page is at http://www.devsite.org if anybody is curious. New blog site goes live soon, I'll announce it here when it does.

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
Although my logon here says "JusTin" in honor of Justin Foote, online I have generally gone by "JT". I've been a fan of RAH since reading "Farmer in the Sky" from my local library--I scanned the shelves looking for any books with the little pink/purple "Atom symbol" meaning SF. I really started connecting with his work when I saw the unabridged Stranger in a Strange Land, and logged onto Prodigy to find some people to discuss it. There was this small group called the Heinlein Forum that caused me to burn many hours on the computer and gave me a way to discuss the rest of his work.

Some years later, here we are! Been happy to help out with the Heinlein Society a little bit with a few blood drives and panel participations (and my dues).

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
Like so many others and as a frequent user of the public library, I was captivated by Heinlein's writings as a youth (perhaps 12 or so- hey i was a late bloomer )- sadly I don't truly recall which of his juveniles were my first read - but my last RAH read was "Glory Road" for the umpteenth time- some call this novel RAH's only real stab at writing fantasy- I call it just a good old fashioned read (among the many other good reads RAH penned)- a rollicking adventure- I've mentioned on numerous occasions, envisioning Rufo, Scar's wise-cracking side kick, being played by Danny Devito :) an amusing vision there

I discovered the old Nitro Forum earlier this millenia and after a couple permutations of said forum ....here I am ! While not a RAH academic, I enjoy the discourse here and the revelations concerning RAH and his writings- each member contributes something very unique to the verbal stew- yes Virginia (pun intended) variety is the spice of life ! My thanks to Bill for his comprehensive bio of RAH and the wealth of info he provided within it-his insights have helped helped explain RAH the man and the basis for his well voiced philosophies - I believe the life lessons RAH presented are (along with the excellent story telling) the reason I return to read RAH over and over again-it resonates and rings true to me

The temptation is to expound on and on here (did I mention RAH the comedian?).............LOL will save it for another day !

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
I was born long ago and far away in another universe. At least it is compared to the US today. It was 1932 in the mountains of Southwest Virginia. My father subscribed to the Saturday Evening Post and it was there I read The Green Hills of Earth. My high school library had Rocket Ship Galileo and led me to ASF and the SF world. I spent 5 years in the Air Force as a pilot and got a job with McDonnell Aircraft writing Pilot’s Handbooks. While at McDonnell, I was loaned to Project Mercury to write the Astronaut’s Handbook for the Mercury capsule so my interest in flying and space travel finally paid off.

In 1952, I gave a talk about space flight and space stations in a public speaking class at Va. Tech. My professor said that it was a very interesting speech but we would never see it in out lifetime. In 1961, I was back at Tech and looked up the professor and reminded him of his comment about my speech. He just laughed and said that’s what he would have said in 1952.

In 1962, I took a job as test project engineer at Arnold Air Force Base conducting wind tunnel tests. I ran tests of the Saturn V, the Gemini ejection seat and the Space shuttle launch configuration. As a pilot and engineer, I always enjoyed the technical background of Heinlein’s stories up to the Moon is a Harsh Mistress. His later books were much less interesting.

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
If my math is correct I was on the old Heinlein Forum at least as far back as 1991 because I remember Bob was 9 and used to post occasionally and he is 28 now....Started on RAH as a kid, oddly I cannot remember my first RAH but I do remember my first SF was Ursula Le Guin. Was a musician, then a teacher, wrote a little bit, then for the last 12 years ran a business treating kids with autism until last June and am now retired and trying to get rid of a house in California so we can move to the house we have in Connecticut. Married to a Heinlein scholar and between us we have 6 kids. The eldest two have read quite a bit of RAH, and the youngest boy has read about 4 - he has his dad's copy of Starship Troopers plopped on the bed as I type. All but the last 2 (twins) are grown and gone now. Maureen (youngest girl) started Poddy recently but I do not know if she finished it - she reads so voraciously it is entirely possible - she hides books in the bed and environs and always seems to be reading about 3 or 4 of them at a time.

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
I first became a Heinlein reader when I discovered Black Pits of Luna in a children's SF anthology at age 9, in 1965. He's never really been very far from my thoughts since then. I believe, without irony, that his books saved my life when I was a teenager. I'm now almost 55 years old. Hard to believe.

I've participated in online Heinlein discussion groups since the early 90s. I guess you could say I've been a Jim Gifford fan since he started his first Heinlein website. I'm grateful to Jim for all he's done to give RAH admirers a place to congregate and share our thoughts, and for his groundbreaking work to help establish legitimate Heinlein scholarship, including his Hugo-nominated RAH: ARC and for giving Heinlein scholars the opportunity to publish their works. I'm especially grateful that Jim, with the help of Peter Scott and others, pulled off the miracle that was the Heinlein Centennial.

I'm grateful also to Bill Patterson for founding the Heinlein Society, the Heinlein Journal, his work as the official Heinlein Scholar, and his tireless, endless, and at times thankless work leading to the landmark biographies.

I'm also grateful to Dr. Robert James for his contributions to Heinlein studies, including but not limited to his discoveries of the manuscript for For Us, the Living, and many biographical details regarding Heinlein's first two wives.

I grew up in Texas, and have lived in the Washington, DC area for the past 23 years. I've been happily married to Cynthia for 32 years, and have 3 great kids: Sheena, 28 (soon expecting our first grandchild!), Maggie, 23, and Thomas (who attended the Heinlein Centennial with me), 22. A CPA and CFO, I've worked for NASA contractors for over 20 years, an experience that has been both exhilarating and disillusioning. ;) Like Heinlein, I truly believe that mankind's destiny is in the stars.

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
In 1957 at age 8, Mrs. Prickett, the librarian at George Washington Elementary in Tulsa, OK, having failed to engage me with Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo or Guadalcanal Diary, handed me a copy of Have Space Suit, Will Travel. I was hooked from the first page, and thereafter read and purchased at least one copy of every Heinlein I could get my hands on. I was an early subscriber to the Virginia Edition. Largely due to Heinlein's influence, I was fascinated by the space program, and took all the Space Science courses I could at Rice University in Houston (there was no undergraduate major in it). I joined the fencing team at Rice because of Glory Road. I would love to have made a career of astrophysics, were it not for the fact that partial differential equations utterly defeated me.

I would love to have flown for the military, but I was too tall, so I took my chances with the Vietnam draft lottery and didn't have to go. I became a computer software guy, currently living in Silicon Valley, and contented myself with peripheral associations with NASA. I was personally acquainted with Shuttle astronaut George "Pinky" Nelson (his wife and I had a mutual friend), and one of my flight instructors for my commercial, instrument, and multi-engine pilot ratings was the younger son of Mercury astronaut Gus Grissom, Scott.

My favorite Heinlein is Time Enough For Love. I never met the man, but I've driven by the Bonny Doon house several times and lucked into an open house tour of the home in Santa Cruz they lived in while they built Bonny Doon, courtesy of Bill Patterson. Bill also allowed me a day of reverential perusal of the special collection at UC Santa Cruz library, before it was all spirited away. The Centennial is the only scifi con I've ever been to. I loved it. Thanks again to everyone involved. And thanks for this forum. I love the opportunity to keep Heinlein alive in my life on a daily basis.

Could we perhaps convince the site royalty - Robert J., Bill P. Jim (yeah, I know, fat chance), and Peter - to post something about yourselves that we don't already know?

Don't already know? *Scratches head*

I have three citizenships: British, American, Canadian, the latter two being earned the hard way. (Memo to self: Renew the British one before next visit.) Not moving to North America until 1983, the extent of my interaction with Heinlein is a letter he wrote in reply to mine (not a form letter with check marks, but a typed one - I have since found the content to be similar to some others he sent). My interest in Heinlein is mostly direct interest in the texts; I tend not to get off on the secondary associations or be a fan of deconstruction.

The Centennial was the best science fiction convention I've ever been to. I wish it could be repeated but lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place. I've got enough hubris to think that it ought to be a model for a new hybrid type of convention but enough pessimism to believe that will never happen.

I've been a software engineer for NASA for many years. Making the move to independent contractor was good for my outlook and also enabled me to get some (technical) books and other media published for an impecunious royalty rate. I've always wanted to write fiction but so far all attempts at getting published have failed; it hasn't been a high priority. I'm now a personal and business coach (http://www.kenshocoaching.com/), a profession I plan to make a larger proportion of my working time. Right now a one year-old is taking a large proportion of all of my time.

Bill Higgins. Loved science fiction from the moment I knew it existed, perhaps age eight. This was about the same time I realized I would probably become a physicist. I bounced off Heinlein in the third grade, but came back to him around age 13 and found his books excellent.

At Notre Dame, and then Michigan State, I started connecting with people who were part of SF fandom. I started attending cons in the Seventies and have not yet stopped. Kelley and I met at a con; later, I married her.

I liked Chicago, so coming out of grad school I applied at Fermilab. I wanted to be involved with spacecraft someday, but high-energy accelerators were a pretty good second choice. I've worked on neutrino beams, control systems, construction databases, superconducting magnets, radiation shielding, tech writing, and beamline operations. Fermilab has been so nice that I never moved on; instead, I have learned about spacecraft in my spare time.

I also got involved with the L5 Society, later the National Space Society.

I've been for about 25 years, at SF cons, astronomy clubs, public libraries, and wherever else I can find people to listen.

Tim Kyger asked me for help on the 2007 Heinlein Centennial. I'm afraid I wasn't much help, but I did wind up giving some talks (Heinlein and space suits; history of the rocket belt) and sitting on some panels. I met a bunch of wonderful people that weekend. The event fired up my interest in historical research, and the opening of semi-online Archives helped a lot. The more I do, the more questions open up for further investigation. It's puzzles all the way down. So far, I've published a magazine article and chapters in two books, but there is much more to write.

Here's of me.

The friendships I made during the making of the Centennial are the iron strength kind, being as they were forged in the heat of battle. Jim and Bill especially, since that's where we started... and the number of times I had to talk someone off a ledge all led to the shared-tribulations-and-tributes camaraderie that lasts a lifetime. It was my great honor.

I'm the outsider of the forum. Never been a part of fandom much, even when I was attending Comicon in San Diego.

I'm thirty-four and currently working for the Alamogordo Public Schools. I've been doing long term sub jobs at the middle school where I did my student teaching. I have endorsements in Language Arts and History.

Before I earned my BS I worked in the restaurant industry for fourteen years cooking and running kitchens. I attended New Mexico State University earning a five year degree in three and a half years.

I've been involved with a local theatre group for many years that puts on melodramas to fund scholarships for local students.

I've first encountered Heinlein in 8th grade with Starship Troopers and Stranger In A Strange Land. His writing has been, for me, a voice that prodded me to observe and question in ways that led me down different paths.

Hey, Rob. I lived in El Paso as a kid and teenager -- we spent a lot of fondly-remembered holiday weekends in Cloudcroft and Ruidoso. Used to go riding up there, and later on 4-wheeling down dirt roads. :-)

I am in reality Daun Eierdam, mostly lifelong Texan who now lives in Laredo, the city with the distinction of having no bookstore which sells new books (we're promised a new chainstore bookstore sometime this summer.)
I am a copy editor for Laredo Morning Times, and in fact I have worked at mostly small newspapers all over Texas, and one fairly large paper in Northwest Arkansas.
Harry and Al turned me on to Heinlein in my fourth year (of five) in college, loaning me a copy of The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, for which their names ever will be among the saints as far as I'm concerned. (I'm talking about Saint Janis, Saint Jimi and Saint Jim, here.) (And yes, I know what I posted about Grace Slick in another part of the forum. I never said I was consistent.)
The second RAH work they loaned me was Farnham's Freehold, which I had some initial doubts about the first time I read it, but which has become an annual must-read by now. (Another annual must-read for me is Treasure Island.)
As far as high literatoor is concerned, other favorite authors are Mark Twain, Dashiell Hammett, Wm. T. Shakespeare and Nelly The Cross-Eyed Cow (I just love her nonfiction masterpiece, Some N-Dimensional Aspects of Hypercube Space-Time, co-authored by Andrew Jackson Libby, with illustrations by Dr. Suess.)
I am currently 61 years old and diabetic. I plan to overcome being 61 years old, by having another birthday. Diabetes is another story.
I am eternally grateful to Bill Patterson for undertaking the RAH biography and eagerly await Volume II.

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
First exposure to Mr. Heinlein's fiction occurred in 1968 soon after I turned 12, in my junior high school library in eastern PA; it offered Have Space Suit - Will Travel and Citizen of the Galaxy, along with some Andre Norton (perhaps Quest Crosstime) and Robert Silverberg's early story collection The Calibrated Alligator. A few years later I bought all of the then-current Signet mass-market Heinlein editions, mostly with the Szafran cover art. By the end of summer 1970 I'd read Stranger (very badly glued new Berkley paperback) and part 1 of I Will Fear No Evil in Galaxy magazine (which didn't make me want to buy further installments). That same year I had joined the Science Fiction Book Club and thereby acquired the Anthony Boucher-edited two-volume Treasury of Great Science Fiction and the Silverberg-edited Science Fiction Hall of Fame. I don't read much recently published SF; not much of it is to my taste.

After 8 May 1988 I wrote a long retrospective on Heinlein's career for my Big Ten campus paper - I was a night editor there as well as a music grad student. I would have liked to be able to go to the Centennial. I've only been to one SF convention of any sort: a Star Trek con at the Americana hotel, NYC, early 1975.

I have not had much luck getting my daughters to read the "boys' books" as they were called at the time of their writing. One of them did read Space Suit and now calls my spouse Mother Thing.

My late father-in-law (whom I never met) was a German immigrant who moved here in the '30s but lost his family to the Nazis; one of our most prized inheritances is a working document from his time at Grumman as a human-factors guy: the 1965 Lunar Excursion Module Familiarization Manual.

At a dance I was made to attend at age 13 or 14, we all got our pick of promotional singles given out by the evening's DJ (I already had a substantial singles collection). I chose "Cool Green Hills of Earth" by Southwind, credited solely to RAH (the same is true for the LP track; label visible at bomber-blog.blogspot.com/2009/12/southwind-ready-to-ride-1970.html). After June I should finally have time to digitize this 45.

I would like to conclude with a positive word about The Virginia Edition: The leather binding is nice and uniform.

Thank you, Peter! The second mirror link worked for me.

Gus Grissom's younger son Scott was one of my flight instructors, so I'm a bit more nostalgic about the Mercury program than I might otherwise be.

I had an interesting conversation in the cafeteria after his lecture, along with several students, with Jim Irwin in the late 70's when he came to the college where I was teaching.

My biggest celebrity encounter was having a beer with Willy Ley in the late 50's when I was an undergraduate. I didn't know then that he and Heinlein were so close, otherwise, I would have pestered him all evening about RAH.

I live in Alaska and work in politics. I have a wife, a six-year-old son and various firearms, archery gear, fishing tackle and other such truck stuffed into every corner of the small condo I currently live in. Most of my books are, unfortunately, in storage but I have read just about every publicly available word by and about RAH and have Mr. Patterson's biography on order. My other main interest is chess and I have played rated tournament chess for the last 30 years. Other favorite authors include Rand, Mencken, Jeff Cooper, Anthony Robbins and Richard Bandler.

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
My first Heinlein books were Puppet Masters (a Signet paperback costing .35) and Double Star (a Book Club hardback that belonged to my father). I was a juvenile (about 10) though the books were not. I did not find the juveniles until I was student teaching in a junior high. I borrowed all of them in a single week, and my roommate and I read all 10 in about three days.

I came to the forum via the Heinlein Centennial. I was the Kansas City person on the ground, and got to know Peter, Jim, Bill, Tim and Keith through all those phone calls, twice a week for a year at least. Good times -- we made it work, and sometimes I think it still surprises us.

Fourth anniversary coming up, guys! Hope you are all going strong and doing well.

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
Hello to my fellow Heinlein fans! Thought I'd introduce myself since I'm brand new here. :)

I'm relatively new to Heinlein's work, at least compared to the folks posting on here. I read my first Heinlein about 5 years ago when my boyfriend introduced me to his work. It was Stranger in a Strange Land that popped my Heinlein cherry and I've never looked back. Moving on to Time Enough for Love and then The Cat Who Walks Through Walls, To Sail Beyond the Sunset and The Number of the Beast. These later works are probably my favorites still and I re-read them pretty often. Usually it starts with me picking up TEfL and turns into the whole cycle again.

Very recently I've been getting into his short stories. Love 'em!

There's more to me than my reading habits, though. I'm also an indie filmmaker and 'daylight' as a massage therapist. I've been thinking a lot recently that maybe turning some of RAH's short stories into short films would be a great way for more folks to discover his work(with the approval of The Society, of course). I'd love to get opinions from real fans on what they'd think about that and if there's something they(you) would want from a project like that.

One of my ideas is an interactive media website that would basically be the web 2.0 version of Time Enough for Love. The idea being that the Howard Foundation has a website and has somehow actually recorded on film the events which LL describes in his memoirs. Like an actual interactive archive set in the fictional 'Leslie LeCroix' timeline. Any filmmaker who is a fan of his work (and there are many, from my experience) could apply and submit a short film, for example the part of his life that takes place on Blessed, or the one with the mirror twins.

I guess that's enough ranting and raving for one post. I'd love your thoughts on my ideas. And thanks for welcoming me into your community! I'm looking forward to nerding out with you guys :D

All the best,
Sammi

Sammi,

You had me at "It was Stranger in a Strange Land that popped my Heinlein cherry." :D

Actually, you would not need the permission of the Heinlein Society for your short film idea, but rather the Heinlein Prize Trust http://www.heinleinprize.com/ (I think). I believe Art Dula is the head of the Trust.

Welcome! Very interesting post.

I am thinking of the live theater productions of some of Heinlein's stories (a couple were at the Centennial), and wondering whether any licensing was required for those. Where's the dividing line? What else can be done without having to go through a lot of legal hassle?

Recalling, say, the Lux Radio Theater at LosCons makes me think that retro or film noir productions of some of the shorts could be appealing. Well, at least to someone with as peculiar sensibilities as myself. "The future the way it used to be," that kind of thing. Classic pulp appeal. No attempt to modernize it. I'd like to see that.

Welcome to the madhouse, Dreadylocks.

I wouldn't normally recommend Stranger as somebody's first Heinlein, mostly because it discouraged my Heinlein reading for a couple of years after I first read it when I was fourteen. It was a bit adult for a naive Texas girl with a squeamish streak when it came to cannibalism. ;) When I re-read it at 30, I loved it, and it's one of my favorites now, although "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" really is my favorite. I'm glad Stranger worked to introduce you to Heinlein.

The web site sounds like a very interesting project. If executed properly, IMHO it could be a wonderful thing. I hope you do it.

I've always thought "Gulf" would make a great film--it's got secret societies, secret agents, a little ultraviolence, a shower scene, a little homoerotic sexual tension, plenty of heterosexual tension and an explosive finish. I don't know how short it could be and hang together though.

Right, I never liked any of those attempts to set Shakespeare in contemporary times, for instance.

I totally agree on Gulf, I've had the same thought, although I'm more concerned about how to depict telepathic dialog without it being like Dune where the actors freeze a la Police Story while you hear a voiceover.

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
Hello Fellow Heinlein Lovers,

I'm a 67 'Year Old Geezer' and an artist; unfortunately, I'm not a Howard, except in spirit. I've been a Sci-Fi fan all my life and RAH has always been right up there in the top 3.

Yes, that's me in the avatar from a few years back, with Orion III Space Plane from 2001:ASO in the background (one of my current projects). I'm studying to be a 3D artist using modo as my favorite software application. If you're interested, you can find my work-in-progress thread , 9 pages and I'm barely started. There are lots of closeup images you've probably never seen, and a lot more to come.

Andrew Jackson Libby has always been one of my favorite characters, and lately I wanted to read all of his/her stories, again, and if lucky, for the first time, in the hope that somehow I have missed one somewhere. So, I started searching and turned up this site, registered and started waiting for a response. Reading the posts, I felt like I was revisiting some old friends I hadn't seen in a long time. My intent was to ask the titles of books/stories where Libby stared or was even mentioned, assuming Misfit was first and Number of the Beast was last, though there may be a mention in Grumbles... I couldn't find Methuselah's Children in my collection, though I can picture it in my hand, so I must have loaned it out. It would have been the third copy I've bought, at least. I found a butchered version in pdf format that I downloaded and printed up...what a mess! But at three AM it at least let me read it for the umpteenth time and puzzle out all the typos. I'll get a hardbound copy in the morning.

I just came in from a smoke break where I read from page 400 of Time Enough For Love, starting at, "Galahad sang a ballad..." By the end of the next paragraph, my tears were blurring the words too much to go on...

Welcome to the forum, Leon. I think my intro is still posted somewhere, so I'll let you find it. :-) I recently re-read "Revolt in 2100" and "The Door into Summer", which I hadn't read for quite a few years. Was fun. Even Heinlein's lesser work tends to be fun. Then there's his best work.... I've got the Virginia Edition of Stranger in a Strange Land, plan to dig it out and reread it one of these days soon. :-)

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
Thanks for the welcome...(I started to say. "Friends," at this point, and then, in my mind "Family" replaced that, and for whatever reason, I can't seem to shake it.) This is very strange...

First off, to the three of you who came in first with a welcome mat, that is, Nick Doten, holmesiv, and Cath... that is, Sakeneko, I went back to page one of this thread and read every post each of you made, just to know a little more about who I was talking to...so often it was like the line from that song by Dylan, "Ain't no use in talk'n to me, It's just the same as talk'n to you." What is that quote that's trying to surface in my mind? One or all of you must know what I'm referring to..I paraphrased it in my first post, something like meeting old friends that I can't remember where I've met them before... I'm almost positive it's an RAH quote...I've read 5 of his works in the past week doing my Libby search, and it's so familiar...

Anyway, one part of my mind says it's kind of strange to feel like I've run into a whole branch of my family that I hadn't even suspected of existing, while at the same time realizing that "family" in this context means ever so much more than the context of flesh and blood family, because that is accidental, while this is a matter of choice, that is, My Family. Unfortunately, those blood relatives are more like some alien form of humanity, with whom I have no relation other than blood. But you, my friends, my true family, we have a kinship of the mind, by choice. Yes, I'm sentimental, at times.

I'm very busy ATM, with 6 projects going at once, and being a smoker, I take periodic 5 minute breaks outside with one of my books, currently, Time Enough For Love. "Immersion," has been running around in my head, as descriptive of this experience of picking up a Heinlein, or other good author, and reading. The image that goes with this concept, for me, is jumping into a turquoise swimming pool from splash to opening my eyes on a blue world that's cold against my skin, a world cut off from that one up there above the surface. Total immersion into the story, where I live for a short (or however long a) time, vicariously one with the characters and their world. I find it analogous to time travel, like the popping around they did in Number of the Beast, here in this world with my current situation to deal with, then *poof* I'm in Dora, the Senior's yacht being dropped into the Green Hills of Earth, current problems of a different nature. I use that effect sometimes to give myself some separation, some perspective. And the world changes color in some aspect. Sometimes, I come out of it when the heat of my cigarette gets close to my fingers and I look down to see two inches of ash, and realize I forgot to smoke it. Better for my health. LOL.

Anyway, it's nice getting to know you all.

Sakeneko, anything new on your web site? The old one just gives me that secondary message. I didn't try the email to the webmaster they suggested...

Playing with these colors (I wish there were more variety), and looking at your avatar, reminded me that I did a front entrance sign for a ballet school. Inside, they had a neon outline of a dancer in just that pose on your avatar. For the signs banner, I made a stencil of that line drawing, minus the flying clothes (or flames or whatever they are), then drew them repeatedly along a flying arch describing her leap through the air, drawing an outline every 5 inches or so, then painted each one a slightly different tone, going through the rainbow spectrum. It was a take off on a multi-exposure photo of a leaping dancer, with each exposure a different color. Wish I still had a picture to show you.

Hi, I'm Summer Sandlin. I'm a credentialed teacher in California (Social Sciences) and an alum of UC Santa Cruz. I never did a drive by of the Bonnie Doon house, but I did manufacture a minor in Literature in hopes of getting my mitts on the Special Collection pass I dreamed of ever since I found out that the Heinlein's donated manuscripts and other odds and ends to the university. Sadly, I never made it. Most people in my generation have no idea who Heinlein is (I was born in 1984), and I have handed out copies of my Heinlein books for years in order to try to spread the word.

I have no idea what my first Heinlein books was... probably a juvenile novel? I know my first brush with scifi was at 11 when my mom handed me I, Robot which is a great starter for a young person as it is short stories and I had a short attention span. I didn't become a voracious reader until I was in college at which point I started scouring used book stores for Heinlein, Bradbury, and Asimov (to name a few).

I am dating a writer (he even went to the trouble of getting a Masters in it from USF!) - and I can envision becoming his stay at home secretary some day as I am already his sounding board and first reader. I love nothing more than to sit with him and bounce ideas around about stories. I have read more science fiction and fantasy than he has so this makes me his encyclopedia of "it's been done already." Odds bobs I've written an essay. Forgive me.

Best,
Summer

Thanks so much. I'm still trying to round up all the Heinlein books, for instance I know I only just read Have Spacesuit, Will Travel last week for the first time and I somehow missed Podkayne of Mars... Don't ask me how THAT is possible! But all in all I think I have gotten most of them.

In addition - my favorite short story is Conventry and my favorite novel is Time Enough for Love. :D

Welcome Dreadylocks, Leon and Summer. Lots of new folks with interesting ideas are a Good Thing. I only appear here occasionally, and then I read as much as possible. Dreadylocks, wait until you read Moon is a Harsh Mistress. I think it's my all-time favorite.

Leon, you're in my age range, and yes I still pretty much look like my icon picture though it's from the Heinlein Centennial. I think Libby was in "Coventry" and Methuselah's Children, then he is mentioned in Time Enough for Love and reappears in Number of the Beast.

And Summer, remember the famous story of Boy Meets Girl was done pretty well by Shakespeare, but there's room for more stories with that theme. See what he wants to do before deciding that "already done" takes the day. But I admit that one of my favorite stories is Spider Robinson's "Melancholy Elephants" -- and he did it in a style which was so perfectly Heinlinean I was very surprised, indeed -- and it addresses "done already" and creativity in a very special way.

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
Hi Folks,

My first Heinlein was "Have Space Suit, Will Travel", borrowed from the public library when I was about 13. I've been a Heinlein evangelist ever since.

I collect "nice editions" of anything that meant anything to me, regardless of its merit in others' eyes or for other reasons... I cut my teeth as a five-year old on Enid Blyton in the land of my birth and hers... and I shamelessly boast a full set of "The Famous Five" in the Hodder & Stoughton hardbacks that were ubiquitous in the UK of the sixties; and the Jonathan Cape editions of the twelve "Swallows and Amazons" tales by Arthur Ransome.

Here in Oz, I've only ever found Heinlein in paperback, and rarely new; I've scoured second hand bookshops over the east coast to cobble together an incomplete collection of his work. With the bibliophile's love of hardcover and slipcase, I idly dreamed of whether I should attempt to organise a limited edition hardcover collection of RAH's work - a whimsy which was brought to earth with a thud when on April 30th just passed (for some unknown reason I was Googling the Master's name) I stumbled on the not-very-broadly-publicised publishing event known as the Virginia Edition.

I was lucky not to have to wait seven years. I ordered on the spot and VE #285 was on my bookshelf on June 10th. Complete. All 46 volumes.
Serendipity.
Can't wipe the smile off my face with a Visa statement!

I work in IT, prefer growing food and drinking wine, and dream of a self sufficient, sustainable lifestyle.
I like to think of myself as my own person, but when I read a Heinlein novel, I realise how much his writing has shaped the way, if not what, I think.

And now that I've rearranged the main bookshelves to fit the VE, I'm going to fish out the books i've never seen or read (For Us, the Living to begin with) and then read the lot, again.

Regards,
Dom

Hi Dominic, welcome. So you grew up in the UK? Me too. Read all my Heinleins by bicycling to all the libraries within range until I discovered interlibrary loans. Now living in Canada.

You've come to a good place for hanging out with Heinlein fans. The people who ran and attended the Heinlein centennial convention 4.99 years ago mostly inhabit these fora.

Plus several refugees from the old Usenet alt.fan.heinlein newsgroup after it self-destructed several years ago. This is a much nicer place than a.f.h was in its waning days.

Thanks folks, warm welcome appreciated.

JG, your "Reader's Companion" is next on my "to get" list.
incidentally, having just bemoaned the fact that I'd never seen a Heinlein hardback here, I ran into three in a second hand bookstore last week. Ironic.

Am halfway through FUTL and (forget who made the point) can see that, yes, it shows Heinlein to have already developed many of the foundational concepts that trickle (nay, pour), into his later work. Whilst it could be considered preachy, I'm still enjoying it. But rather than go off topic for the board, I'll save my impressions for another post, another place (those of you familiar with the forum landscape might suggest the 'village' to host that chat) and another time.

Don't know if anyone's posed this question before, but here goes; I could leave her to dive in and just discover the Worlds of RAH at random, but I'd thought of giving my 17 year old daughter a "primer" - a list of the order in which to read them - partly to get the Future History in chronological order, but also to allow a move from the juveniles into the maturer works in a way that... adds to the experience. So there's the challenge - get a kids nose into a book (and off the telly, laptop, xbox etc) and keep 'em reading until they moan "Awww! is that all he wrote Dad?" ;)

(Or is it in your Reader's Companion, James?)

Dominic, you can ask that kind of question in the "RAH Discussion" forum, and get all literary in the "Advanced Heinlein" forum.

The question of how to get kids started has come up before. The book that gets the most votes is "Have Spacesuit, Will Travel," although it's not a landslide.

I think "Have Spacesuit, Will Travel" is ideal for ten-year-old boys. :-) Dominic has a seventeen-year-old daughter. He knows her and I do not, but I have a number of nieces and goddaughters of that general age or who passed through it recently. With any of them, I would try "Podkayne from Mars", "The Menace from Earth", or if you've got an unusually mature reader who is familiar with American history and up to reading an adult book, maybe "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress". (That last is my favorite Heinlein book, period.)

I will point out that you were never an eighteen-year-old girl, unless there's something you REALLY haven't been telling us. ;) I read "Have Space Suit, Will Travel" during college, and enjoyed it very much.

I was thinking about something likely to appeal to somebody who isn't already thoroughly hooked on SF and Heinlein, though. I think my choices would probably work better for most older teenage young women these days.

"Harsh Mistress" hands-down favorite Heinlein, and probably better to start a 17-year-old off with than any of the juveniles, especially Poddy, as it was dated years before it was even published.

"Have Spacesuit" is also great. I was in my thirties before I discovered it, having shunned the Heinlein juveniles till then, don't know why.

Thank you to all for the very nice welcomes. I certainly will try to contribute meaningfully to the board in the future; for now, I'm reading all that I can in order to familiarize myself with the rules and content of the various forums. So far, I'm impressed with the quality and depth which seem to characterize the discussions that I've had the opportunity to survey. It's exciting, actually. As usual, I only wish I had more time. Never enough time.

My first book was 'The Door into Summer' It blew me away. My mother read it first, and handed it around to her two kids. She and my sister became my first two water brothers when we discovered SiSL. There were more water brothers to come and I *DO* take water brotherhood as a serious responsability. Later in life I became Pagan and, was amazed to find that there was a pagan group called The Church of all Worlds. I did not join. Heinlein met the initial leaders of this group and was polite, but nothing more meaningful ever evolved from the meeting. Heinlein always said his motives for writing were to just tell a good story. I doubt very much he ever had any intention of folowing the teachings of Valentine Michael Smith. ;)

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
Hi all
Stumbled across the forum yesterday. Thanks.
I'm a forty year old Australian. Living currently in perth but grew up in the country and spent much of my adult life in Sydney.

Always been an avid reader, as a kid I was a horror kid, and until I was 12 I was obsessed with Steven king, but then I discovered Poe and Lovecraft.

I was 15 when looking through my fathers bookshelf for something new and noticed a lot of Heinlein books, I'd never heard of him and apart from Frankenstein had not read any science fiction (I was really into horror) but one back blurb grabbed me so I had a go.
I read in a sitting and was well and truly hooked. The book was MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS.
Over the coming weeks I read all the Heinlein he had. Which was sadly incomplete and a bit over the shot.

I asked my father why he had them as I had never seen him read SF. And he explained that at the time all the hippies were into RAH. Though strangely he didn't have a copy of stranger in a strange land, perhaps it was borrowed and not returned.

Now 25 years later I've read an reread everything as I'm sure everyone here has.

Yesterday I started puppet masters and was thinking about how for some reason it doesn't feel like a RAH Jen I read it. I. Any put my finger on it.

I'm not a rich man and my Heinlein collection is mainly old paperbacks from thrift stores which is fine by me, as I READ them :). I do by doubles and triples and...,,, whatever. However I did find a first edition STRANGER in a shop for $8 (hardcover sans dust jacket ) and a few other firsts from juvenile titles, all worn and well read but I love them.

Favourite book is still MOON.
Favourite story is ALL YOU ZOMBIES.

Anyway. I usually use forums for my other passion of vintage movie posters but I used to write on a forum called templeton gates years ago and it would be nice to talk RAH etc again

Thanks

Ari

Welcome, Ari. I think you will find this forum worth your while. There are many here who know a lot more than me about Heinlein so I find it a constant learning experience, in the best sense of that phrase.

Welcome, Ari! "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" is also my favorite Heinlein novel. I started reading Heinlein seriously a bit late, after a too-early encounter with "Stranger in a Strange Land": I was fourteen years old and it shocked me deeply. (Hey, I grew up in the Bible belt, although my parents were agnostic and I'd never gone to church.) Fortunately a few years later I read some of his better juveniles, then TMIAHM and was hooked. I finally reread SIASL when I was about thirty, and loved it. ;)

Hi everyone,

some of you might still remember me from alt.fan.heinlein, I was a semi-active regular there for a while a good number of years back. I'm about to successfully complete my 4th decade on this planet soon, and even though I'm originally from Germany I call "nice and sunny" Massachusetts my home now (eventually I might get used to the New England weather, it just hasn't happened yet). I've read pretty much everything by Heinlein and now I'm working my way through the juveniles and the Future History with my step-son (11), which leads me to look at some of the classics with slightly adjusted eyes.

Most important question of course: Did anyone bring the bar or did that stay back at a.f.h.?

CU soon in one of the other areas :-)

Hi, Oliver! You might remember me from AFH, or from the GENie SFRT, as "Ariel" or under my real name, Catherine (Hampton) Jefferson. Welcome to the Heinlein forum!

The bar is installed and waiting, although most people seem to take their drinks and wander around the forum. Feel free to make use of it. (Walking around, slurping ${BEVERAGE_OF_CHOICE}.)

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
Though I'm known as "mostlyclassics" throughout the internet, in real life I'm Tom Kendall. "Mostly Classics" is my DBA: I deal in older postage stamps and postal history.

My first Heinlein was Time for the Stars. My grandfather, who was the midwest book buyer for A.C. McClurg, gave me the galley proof and wanted to know my opinion. As he put it, "You're a kid, and I'm not." After I read it, he grilled me for about an hour. Thereafter, every summer, I read the latest Heinlein juvenile in the galley proofs, followed by an intensive discussion with my grandfather.

As was not the case for most other science fiction writers, he had a great respect for RAH: he regarded him as a sort of cross between Mark Twain and Ernest Hemingway as regards style, but vastly more disciplined than Hemingway, whom he knew and often helped edit. (Once I was in his home office flipping through his stamp collection when Hemingway called. Then ensued a long conversation between my grandfather and Hemingway, my grandfather's end of the conversation lubricated by several martinis. I still have his martini glasses. I wish I could remember more of the discussion. I do remember it had to do with The Old Man and the Sea, with which Hemingway was struggling. But I was only four at the time.)

Ever since Time for the Stars, I've been an avid RAH fan. After my grandfather retired, I even went so far as to search out each new Heinlein and shell out hard money for it. Many of the books I've had to replace at least twice. Some were read to death, some were lent and never returned and some disappeared in moves or a basement flood. Don't keep part of your library in a basement prone to flooding!

Finally I replaced all my dog-eared paperbacks with the Virginia Edition last year. What a quality production! Now I'm rereading the entire oevre. Starting with Time for the Stars, of course.

Hi, Tom. What terrific childhood memories! And congrats on getting the Virginia Edition! I have one, too, but I started with "Have Space Suit, Will Travel," my introduction to Heinlein by my 3rd grade library teacher, Mrs. Prickett. I wish I could have tracked her down as an adult and told her how much it meant to me! That book turned me into a reader.

Hi Tom - Love the story! Welcome aboard.
I'd never read Hemingway until Christmas just passed - a friend who'd just received her PhD (in poetry) was adamant this was a gap in my education that had to be filled :) and I'm now reading A Moveable Feast. When I next see her I'll be using your anecdote to tempt her toward Heinlein!

Hi, I go by Kangaroo. I began reading Heinlein when I was 14 and have read just about everything he wrote. I am 64 now and haven't picked up a Heinlein book in awhile, but would in a heartbeat if I wanted to. I suppose my favorite is Revolt in 2100. I am strongly opposed to theocracy and thus loved it. As a Freemason I was intrigued to learn the rebels were led by Masonic Army officers from some Masonic source I have since forgotten. As we led the revolt against King George III (not specifically as a group, but leaders of the American Revolution including Franklin, Washington, Hancock, Lafayette, Rush, and Sherman were Masons, we informally claim it was a Masonic Revolution), we certainly could again should real tyranny arise.

I had reservations of associating myself with a group in which Jerry Pournelle is a board member as I disagree with his politics, but, why not? He's a hell of a writer and tells great stories. We don't generally choose our favorite artists by their politics.

Thank you for the opportunity to join the community.

Post Re: Introduce Yourself
Hello, Heinlein Society!

By way of a quick introduction (I have been known to go on and on), I just wanted to say howdy. My name is Andrew, although my friends call me Chucky so by all means, feel free to call me Chucky.

I encountered the Society for the first time at Worldcon 75 in Helsinki, having come very late to the wider science fiction community. Having chatted with the members present, I got myself a membership as soon as possible.

I have been reading and writing science fiction since I learned to read and write, but was never part of what you might call a supportive or nurturing environment. Still, in the world inside my own head, I was never alone. Only now, as my 40th birthday approaches, have I begun to find people of the same worldview. People who look up at the stars and still think there's a chance we might go there, instead of dying here, in the mud, with our hands around each other's throats.

I did warn you that I go on and on.

It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Thank you all for existing.

- Chucky
