Stranger in a Strange Land - Codes, Variations, Pirate Copy
We were discussing this in the Heinlein Forum on FB.
My original post there...
I have 14 copies of Stranger in a Strange Land. Two original 1st editions. 1 - 1991 hardback 30th anniversary edition. 1 leather bound edition. 2 of the large paperback uncut versions and the remainders are various paperbacks with different covers. I am aware of the C22 and C23 code and meanings. What I am looking for is info on some of the other codes such as 39 K or 52 M. Also the difference in the 408 length versus the 414 pg length. What are the variations on the Taiwan Pirated copies. I am having a hard time finding any real detailed info on this subject. I have searched high and low online and find little bits of info here and there and sometimes info that contradicts what I have just read elsewhere.
Thanks for the help. Although I had a fair amount of info on some of these variations assume i know nothing in case there is something I have missed or overlooked.
Plus...
Cid Jesse I'm curious in what the answers are.
Tim Morgan Me too! I have one of the 414 page versions, so I'd like to know how it differs from the original 408 page version.
Knoel Honn Tim Morgan is there a code on page 411? if so what is it?
Tim Morgan Yes, "37 L". Seems to have been added later, as I can see it faintly, mirror imaged, on the preceding page.

http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/Pub ... _1960-1964 indicates 37L is one of several book club editions.

Knoel Honn Thanks I have been looking for this info. Maybe i can gradually compile a more inclusive list of all of the codes and data a collector might need on this particular book. It's a start.
Tim Morgan That would be awesome! I'm wondering if 414 vs 408 is book club vs. regular edition? If so, is it just re-typeset or is there some content difference? The latter would be very laborious to find. If I can assist, let me know. Would make a good article for The Heinlein Journal, if/when.
Knoel Honn I do know that there are both trade and BCE that are only 408 pages. Trade has a C22 gutter code on 408 and BCE has C23 gutter code on 408.
Also...
Knoel Honn I understand the cut and uncut versions. There are two different lengths of the "original" version. 408 pgs and 414 pgs. Plus there are numerous different codes indicating different runs of the original book. I guess my questions primarily focus on the original 1961 hardback version's and pirated versions too.
In talking to Geo Rule and John Tilden it was suggested to post here and see if anyone here had more information or insight into the varying length of the Original 1961 books as well as the various gutter codes and reprint codes. For being a highly collected book real information is limited and confusing at times.
Thanks~
