Surprised nobody has posted this here yet. Friday evening at Balticon the Heinlein Society awarded the 2016 Heinlein Award to Kim Stanley Robinson. Robinson's "Red Mars", "Green Mars", and "Blue Mars", published mostly in the 1990s, had already snagged two Nebula *AND* two Hugo awards, as I recall.

Despite their different political and economic views, I suspect that Heinlein and Robinson would have agreed about the most important thing -- human beings settling Mars or *somewhere* else than Earth! ;)

It slipped my mind to post it here.... to be accurate, the Heinlein Award is given by a committee run by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society. A member of the Heinlein Society is on the awarding committee and the Society gives a fair amount of money to support the award itself.

A friend videoed the remarks if anyone would like to see them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBkb3YpRfIQ

If you were there, Catherine, I'm sorry I didn't say hello after all these years!

No, I wasn't there, unfortunately. I might be at Worldcon *next* year, but rarely make it to SF cons any more. Unlike the SF Bay Area, where I lived for almost 20 years, Reno doesn't have any local cons, at least that I have heard about.

Would be fun to meet you! :)

How many Heinlein Awards are there?

We're discussing here the Balticon/BSFS award for literature.

The National Space Society gives out one for contributions to space development--this one in the form of a miniature brass cannon.

I have a vague notion that one or more other Heinlein Awards exist.

Ah, from a few days ago that the Heinlein Prize Trust is giving Jeff Bezos, of Amazon and Blue Origin fame, a prize. This appears to be associated with Heinlein's estate.

Are there others?

The only other honor I can think of is the Heinlein Chair in Aerospace Engineering at the Naval Academy. Currently held by Capt. Kenneth Reightler. http://www.heinleinprize.com/2013/02/re ... ein-chair/
