... I thought I'd add my thoughts about a 20-year-old novel, John Varley's Steel Beach, which I just finished.
Kinda takes off where The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress left off, with Mike going silent.
While the necessity for this struck me right off, it seems that many libertarians of the time just didn't get it. Read Steel Beach; you'll get it.
However, I don't think that was the point of the novel. Seems to be much more concerned with man, woman, life, death, infinity (OK, not infinity, I just thought fans of the old Doctor Kildare TV series might enjoy that).
In other words, this is Varley's take on a favorite Heinlein theme: Who am I? Why Am I Here? Why Are You Here? What's It All About, Alfie?

One of the best opening lines of any novel ever written: "In five years, the penis will be obsolete."

It's his best book, I think. His best writing is in his early short stories, but this is his best novel.
