A Question about Ansibles....
So I have no idea where the name for the "ansible" (REF: LeGuin/Card) came from. I fully understand the idea has been around in writing for a while... but do you think someone coined it using Heinlein's middle name - Anson? Thoughts?

Re: A Question about Ansibles....
Wikipedia sez:
Le Guin states that she derived the name from "answerable," as the device would allow its users to receive answers to their messages in a reasonable amount of time, even over interstellar distances.
That's based on this:
A Usenet message posted by Dave Goldman in 2001 said that he asked her about her inspiration and reports that she told him that she got it from answerable.
here
I wouldn't take that as definitive, but there you go.

Re: A Question about Ansibles....
That's some great info. I honestly haven't read any of LeGuin's scifi... I hear good things, and I've read one of her fantasy series - The first book is Powers I believe. My only notion of an ansible was from Ender's Game. It just occurred to me since I've been trolling through Heinlein stuff and JUST re-read Ender's Game that there might be any relationship.

Re: A Question about Ansibles....
Didn't Blish's Cities in Flight have ansibles? I'd swear the concept is older than the LeGuin cite.

Re: A Question about Ansibles....
Yes, not by that name. Cities in Flight is one of my favorite series and I reread it for the nth time recently. They have a that communicates instantly with all other Dirac transceivers throughout the universe. It does not, however, share the property of the device of the same name in Blish's more famous short story "Beep", which makes available all Dirac communications that have ever been sent or will ever be sent. It's just instantaneous communication.
