Post SFFNet Shutting Down After 20 Years :(
FYI, in case any of you wanted to wander over and say goodbye, SFFNet (http://www.sff.net) is shutting down after 20 years. It opened in August 1996. I gather that it hasn't been paying for itself for a couple of years and the financial burden got to be too much.

SFFNet was one of two communities that grew out of the old GENie SFRT, a pre-internet online community on the old General Electric Network for Information Exchange. I've been an SF reader since elementary school, and a Heinlein fan since high school, but it was on GENie that I got hooked into SF fandom and found out about cons. :) It was on SFFNet that I learned about this forum; I think Justin posted there. So blame him! <VBVEG>

A lot of the old SF fandom resources are shutting down, as people move to Facebook (sigh) and social media. Personally I prefer newsgroups and/or forums with actual topics, but that doesn't seem to be the fashion these days.

It is a shame, sakeneko. Many other list groups for specific interests have shut down over the last decade, though.

I'm a member of Facebook, but I haven't posted anything specific about me, nor do I participate in anything there. I got whacked hard by some trolls, so that was the end of active participation at Facebook for me. I feel much more comfortable here.

I just opened a Facebook account, but other than my real name, Facebook doesn't have any accurate information about me in the profile. I don't plan to use it except for this group and maybe one or two similar things. I specifically haven't told any family members about it; I don't want family connections showing up for Facebook's data collection and advertisers. <wry grin>

The community appears to be moving over nicely. Justin was part of SFFNet -- I hope he shows up there if he is on Facebook.

Thanks for posting this, Catherine. Sad to see, but when they lost me last year I knew they didn't have long to go because I'd been a member since 1997. It just didn't make sense to keep paying, though.

I'm still here, try to check every few weeks. I'm active on Facebook as the main admin of the "Heinlein Forum" group which is not formally affiliated with THS but was on SFF Net and Prodigy and GEnie before that. If anyone is keeping track I'm still Treasurer of the Heinlein Society as well. ;)

I go by "JT" most other places but I couldn't use two characters based on the phpBB software so here I'm "JusTin". ;)

Okay, JusTin, since so much activity is moving over to Facebook, I've filled in "Books" with The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress and applied to join the closed Heinlein Forum. Maybe they'll let me join, based on that minimal information. Sigh. I really dislike Facebook.

Hey, JusTin, just sent a join request. I didn't realize there were instructions somewhere on the group page. I'll look for them and follow them belatedly. ;)
