Merchants of Doubt
I've just started reading this book, but it's already riveting and arresting. It's about how the same tactics that were used to sow doubt about the effects of smoking are being used for global warning; in fact, some of the same people are doing it.
The story of the tobacco conspiracy is teeth-grinding in its extent. The causal link to lung cancer was proven in the thirties. In fact, the tobacco companies' own scientists proved most health effects before anyone else.
And "own" is apposite. Their strategy was to pour money into basic research of all kinds until some prominent scientists were sucking at the teat, and then get them to support the cause.
Gripping stuff.

Re: Merchants of Doubt
I'm further on in the book now and be warned, it is enough to make you want to rip the head off a teddy bear. The authors systematically document a decades-long pattern of organized actions to discredit acid rain, Rachel Carson, global warming... often by the same people. The perpetrators here have a history of full frontal attack on their opponents, so I hope these writers aren't ruined like some of the politically naive scientists they document. But since they have about a dozen citations per page backing up their claims, I think they at least have truth on their side.
