Please post here any problems with the Forum since its move to the new servers.

Problems noted so far:
a) Avatars did not come across. It is recommended that you upload them again.
b) Board Style 'Getaway Green' doesn't work and will prohibit any user who has the style from logging in. If you have this problem email me at dwrighsr@windstream.net
c) The option to 'Log me in automatically' doesn't appear to work. If it does work for you, please let me know at the above address.
d) Make sure that you refresh your THS main page. If you don't, the link to the Forum will cause you to go into a loop preventing login. the new direct link to the Forum is http://www.heinleinsociety.org/thsnexus/

Please don't hesitate to post any problems that you encounter here.

Post subject:  Dates of posts

When I read a post, I often glance at the sidebar to see the posting date. However, the date immediately at the side, under the poster's name and avatar, is the poster's join date. On a long post, its posting date at the lower corner isn't even on the screen when I begin reading.

1. Would it be possible to shift the posting date to immediately under the name/avatar, or other more prominent location?

2. As a second choice, could the posting date be made bold?

Post subject:  Re: Feedback

The good thing about phpBB3 is that it's extremely flexible. Varying skins put the posting date (and other bits) in various locations, with various degrees of prominence. I agree that the posting date should be more readily, er, readable, especially on a forum such as this where the pace tends to be leisurely and discussions can be tacked onto for months.

That said, it's something of a pain to tweak the base elements of a style, because the next update will overwrite those patches. The structure is also rather complex and while bolding the timestamp font could be simple, keeping it neatly contained in the overall page format would be hairy and moving it could be very hairy indeed. Styles are also independent and the fixes would need to be applied to both the Green and Blue variations of the skin, as they do not share any common code.

I will take a quick look at the skin code and if I can find a way to make the posting date more prominent (bold and/or color) I will pass the patch along to Rob. Otherwise, everyone is free to rummage the thousands of phpBB skins and suggest ones that are better suited to the needs here.

Thanks! ... Sounds like a game of bold Skins versus tricky Coders.

Post subject:  Re: Feedback

I've found the pressure point and passed some notes on to Geo and Rob, as I no longer have code-level access to things. Moving the posting date is probably not reasonable, but making it bold and a standout color should work. Stay tuned.

It might be worth removing the user's join date from the listings as well - it's not particularly useful info on this site and would eliminate confusion. Anyone curious can call up the member profile in a click.

Post subject:  Re: Feedback

Removing the join-date is a good idea. The join-date is nice to have handy in the Profile, but surely it's a low priority to display with each and every post, as well as distracting for at least some of us.

So Jim, now you are in the enviable position of Consultant Without Responsibility? Continuing the pay, perks, and use of the Nexus jet and the beach in Bora Bora, while adding access to one of the Heinlein Society rockets and the Luna City resort. Just rewards, I say.

Post subject:  Re: Feedback

I've never had a problem finding the posting date. It's at the bottom left. I guess it's an individual thing. However, I do take a certain perverse and borderline unexplainable pride in having the second-oldest join date, after Jim, and would hate to see it disappear altogether. ;)

Post subject:  Fixes to Posting date

As you will have noticed, the posting date has been changed. However, some unexpected side effect has popped up. The background on the site logo has changed to black and you can just barely read the index items below the site index.

My apologies. I have put in request for Jim to help out, and will get it fixed as soon as possible.

Weird. The index names using Safari and Firefox are just barely legible after cranking the page magnification to max. iCab's magnification works differently, so by the time the words are large enough to see, they also fall behind the box below.

The posting date does visually pop-out nicely: much improved!

Post subject:  Re: Feedback

An interesting time. I have been able to reset the system headers correctly, however, any attempt to change the posting time display repeats the original problem, a Black header and unreadable index line.

Will have to do more research before attempting again.

My apologies for the inconvenience. Thanks for your patience.

Post subject:  Re: Feedback

Well, it looks good now, via Safari. Posting date is bold red, while NexusForum header is clear and index line easily readable.

That emboldened post date only appears to be in the default style. I was set to that when I logged on today (I usually use Getaway Green). I set myself back to Green and found no bold.

I'm not calling for it, either, just wanted you to know in case you thought it carried through to all styles.

Odd. The driving software here seems finical. But I am quite familiar with programming languages wherein the addition or deletion of a hyphen (for instance) can generate several thousand compilation errors where there were none before. And so on.

Post subject:  Re: Feedback

Like most complex online-ware these days, phpBB is mostly straightforward HTML/CSS code. That's the simple part. The problem is that it assembles the bits on the fly and the dynamic pages can develop horrendous flaws from a single unintended code error.

I think you can cut and paste that one definition from one theme to the other without a crisis, David. After all, we have to keep the *ahem* Green Party happy, too. :)

Finally! Got the Green working with bold posting-date. If you were previously on green and got switched back to blue, my apologies. You can reset it now to green.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if there are any other problems.

As you can see, I have added the Heinlein Society Logo to the Forum webpages. I hope that you like it.

If there are any problems, don't hesitate to let me know.

If you don't see the logos immediately, refresh your browser, or clear your cache.

Post subject:  Re: Feedback

Thanks to Jim Gifford, A better site logo has been added to the forum which involved changing the center logo rather than using the left and right logos to hold the Heinlein logo. (The left and right logos are no longer used which reverts the left and right sides back to the background colors).

I tried Jim's approach, but no matter what I tried in merging the Heinlein logo with the Nexus logo, it came out screwy, so I took the approach I did. This one, IMHO, symbolically better completes the transition from the original Nexus Forum to the new Heinlein-Nexus Forum. (And the orange color in the Heinlein logo is cleaner than what I had.)

Again. Thanks for your patience.

For what it's worth, I found my way over from the old Nexus Forum. My account and login appear to have transferred seamlessly and I'm having no problems with anything.

I know that *SOMETHING TERRIBLE* *must* be about to happen. <G>

Just curious... can I elect to "mark forums UNread" ?

I've marked them as "read" and can no longer distinguish the older topics I haven't browsed through :?

I find it more helpful to visit each new post until there are no orange dots left. I don't think there's a "mark unread" function.
