Would it be possible to setup something so people could write stories in the Heinlein universe, and post them for others to enjoy? ,

There is an official Bonanza website that does quite a lot of this, respecting copying, with lots of guidelines, and they are very busy. I've been writing scenes that fit into 'Tunnel in the Sky' recently, with no intention of publishing ... but it would be fun to share them with others.

Thanks.

I think this would be a great idea and I do not know whether copyright applies and if so whether the estate grants permission. In other words, IANAL. Do we have one handy?

FANFIC! ;)

I'd definitely check with the foundation, though, before putting up any such thing here. Fanfic lives in a grey area as far as copyright is concerned. Some writers (Lois McMaster Bujold among them) wrote fanfic themselves before becoming professionals and tend to be "fanfic friendly"; others not so much for all kinds of reasons. I'd respect the Foundation's veto on this if they give one.

But it might be fun to try to write a "Heinlein type" short story and see how well I could do it.

So ... how or who approaches the Foundation to ask? I'm developing a new version of Tunnel in the Sky even as we speak. Published no where, and I won't without permission. Still, I'm having great fun.

You see, there's a new character named Ana whose familiar with Captain's law. She also has two genetically engineered cats on their 'solo survival' (substitute 'trio survival'), and she's armed with a Roman short sword, the best infantry weapon ever created until the bayoneted M-16 came along. Oh, and Rod says 'she's okay' ... when Jimmy asks if he likes her.

Someone stop me before I keep writing!

:P

Vera,

When I was researching the possibility of having a "Lady Vivamus" sword replica produced, I was advised that the Heinlein Prize Trust holds the copyrights and there is a contact on the Trust website.

Good luck and tell us what you find out. I have written a fair amount of short fiction and might try my hand at a story set in the Heinlein universe, too. I've always wondered what happened after the events in Between Planets.
