Bug Hunt at Outpost Seven
I'm the person responsible for the note on ... oh, *one* of the Wikipedia articles noting that the original ST movie didn't actually start life as a Heinlein adaptation... but I *cannot* locate the magazine article that asserts that it was actually titled as this thread to cite it.
I *think* it was in American Cinematographer, since I don't read Cinefantastique, but I suppose it could have been in sister pub Femme Fatales. :-}
Does anyone else know where that particular reference exists? They're quoting either Verhoeven or Esterhasz, but again I don't know which.

I've never heard that rumor.
I do know that "I, Robot" was well into development before the Asimov title and minor bits were grafted on.

Re: Bug Hunt at Outpost Seven
The article I remember was quite explicit.
In some pre-production meeting, someone new to the project said something like "this is an awful lot like that Heinlein book"
"Huh?"
"Yeah, _Starship Troopers_. I wonder if anyone has an option on it?"

Ok, Bill... but can you *source* it?

I've heard - and have as many citations as you do, Bill - that Verhoover read only the back cover blurb and - later - the first chapter. Nothing more.

And yet, Bill, I'm 100% certain I read it in a magazine article on actual paper. I guess I'm going to have to go find indexes for AC and the CF mags.

Suggestion: Ask in a film-related forum. I suggest Badmovies.org for a start.

It appears it was featured in the November 97 AC; I'm going to check library collections around here.. though I might end up having to call the UF film school.
