Whedon directed the Avengers? Then I'm not surprised that it's really good. Just saw "Captain America", which was quite good although not *quite* living up to the hype. I'm looking forward to seeing the Avengers, especially now.

Lives up to every bit of the hype. And has more well-crafted and deftly-delivered punchlines than a Neil Simon comedy. Hulk delivers the best one, hands down. If I had to pick one blurbesque word for it all: deft. Balanced, compelling, thrilling, believable... deft. Kudos to Joss Whedon. |

I agree completely. I enjoyed all the "prequel" movies (Iron Man, Thor and Captain America) so I expected to enjoy this one, too. Since I'm also a fan of Joss Whedon's work (Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Serenity), knowing he was both the writer and director for this raised my expectations further. Avengers did not disappoint my elevated expectations. If you've seen the previous Marvel movies, you probably know that there is usually an extra scene at the end of the credits. For the Avengers, there are two and both are worth the wait. |

That's pretty funny. I guess I'll catch it on the re-watch. Supposedly the disc release will have 15-20 minutes more, mostly centered on Cap trying to adapt to the new world - which will be the core of Cap 2 as well. |

I can see why they'd cut scenes of Cap's adjustment to keep the pace up, but I'd be glad to see them in an extended edition. The first Cap movie is my favorite of the prequels. I very much liked the WW II setting and the origin story. My only complaint about Avengers, and it's a minor one, is that it didn't tell us very much about the alien army that was assisting Loki. Apparently, they were the Chitauri and they do have a history in the Marvel comics, but it all happened after I stopped reading comics regularly (way back at the end of the Silver Age) so I did not know who they were. |

What comics interest I have is DC-biased (honestly, Marvel always seemed a little adolescent and underwhelming to me...) but I dimly perceive a LOT of material that's only meaningful to established fans. I had no clue who the Ron Perlman look-alike in the tag scene was, but I got the gist. I liked CA a lot as well - especially in the hands of Joe Johnston, who did such a wonderful job with that era in Rocketeer. It'd be nice to see CA2 continue with a good presentation of Cap - as that brief scene with Agent Coulson so neatly captured, maybe we need an honest, patriotic good guy instead of another broken, bitter, cynical outcast. Watching Cap overcome his own displacement and find meaning in the world of 2013 or so could be a cultural landmark. Or comic-book crap. I never count on even the best in Hollyweird for anything but grasp-the-last-buck thinking, and I'm particularly browned off at an industry acquaintance right now. |

I read both DC and Marvel. I was (and am, I guess) a big fan of Batman (because he had cool vehicles that I could build as models) and the Blackhawks. The Blackhawks flew airplanes, and I loved planes as a kid (jets were exciting in the late 50's). My interest was rekindled a while back and led me to build the internet reference for the Blackhawks (). But as a teenager, Marvel did a good job of speaking to my feelings about the world at that age. I quit reading comics for many decades and when I tried them periodically I didn't like the dark and grim tone that was common to so many. I still read a few titles but they are independents, not DC or Marvel. Anyway, sort of back on topic....I sure hope that CA2 is a good movie but I agree completely that it is not a given. The Christopher Reeves Superman movies and the 1990's Batman movies are examples of how a first good comic book movie can be followed by increasingly bad ones. I also agree about Johnston and The Rocketeer. I liked that movie a lot and am still disappointed that there were no more made. |

We went to see Avengers yesterday. Wow. And I'm not even a comics fan -- Joe had to tell me all the stuff I missed. It didn't matter -- this movie was really wonderful.
