Post Thaddeus Ashby
I have been reading Anne C. Heller's excellent biography Ayn Rand and the World She Made. At p. 183 it states that Thaddeus Ashby, who lived with Rand and her husband at their "ranch" in Chatsworth, California in 1944-5, drifted away from her and: "During the 1950s and 60s he worked for tiny libertarian magazines and became a devotee of Robert Heinlein, as well as the effects of magic mushrooms."

Well, that was so striking I just had to ask if anyone here ever met the man, or even heard of him in connection to Heinlein (or took mushrooms with him)? :)

The note cites Brian Doherty's Radicals for Capitalism as the source.

Here is an interesting appreciation of Ashby written after his death in 2007

Sounds like about 25% of the population in the late 50s and 1960s - not the hippies, necessarily, but all those who just cut the conventional ties and "found themselves" somewhere.
