I recently had surgery, and the doctor did it with a . If I had had this particular procedure done in the traditional, non-laproscopic way, I'd have been in the hospital recovering for a week due to the large incision, and likely needed some sort of blood transfusion to replace that lost during the operation. As it was, I lost about 100 ml of blood, and went home the next day. Not only does the robotic system allow micro-manipulators, but the control system "smooths out" tremors and vibrations from the surgeon's hands, allowing for more accuracy with the knife than could be done manually. I keep forgetting to ask the doctor (at follow up visits -- I had one today) if he's ever heard the term "Waldo" applied to the system. |

BillMullins, I hope your recovery is quick and complete! My daughter-in-law had a laparoscopic cholesystectomy a couple of years ago. She went home the next morning and was back at work a few days later. By contrast, my gall bladder was dug out in 1979. While there were complications, and the surgeon had to drastically extend the incision, the original slice was a good 3½ inches. Had there been no complications, my internist guaranteed me I'd be in the hospital for several days and recovery would have taken a couple of weeks. Those surgical Waldos are amazing devices! (I don't care what they call them. They'll always be Waldos to me.) |

Thanks for the good wishes. Recovery has been pretty good. Word to the wise -- get your prostate checked. |

Excellent advice, BillMullins. I get checked every year (blood test and physical exam), ever since my bladder started "saving some for the next time," if you get my meaning. |
