Unseen Photos of Destination Moon
Life magazine dispatched photographer Allan Grant to cover the filming of Destination Moon.
Recently Google added millions of images from Life's archives. I have found , the vast majority never published.
SEE the rigging and nets as stuntmen in space suits dangle in the air!
SEE forced perspective as "midget actors" working in the background make the lunar set look bigger!
SEE gag photos posed for the visiting lensman!
I am fond of
I believe the guy in the center is Irving Pichel, the director, and the guy on the right is George Pal, the producer.
Before you ask, I haven't found any photos of Heinlein in this collection.
Enjoy browsing.

Re: Unseen Photos of Destination Moon
Sudden thought: Did Pichel shoot a ballet sequence and then drop it from the movie?
Would be out of keeping with his mighty efforts to achieve realism, of course. So it seems unlikely.

Re: Unseen Photos of Destination Moon
I found some more photos. There are 86 pictures of ballet dancers on the Destination Moon set.
In my blog at , I ask for help in figuring out why. Seek details there.

Re: Unseen Photos of Destination Moon
Bill H -- don't know if you are still chasing this down, but have you tried to get in contact with George Pal's son David Pal? He worked with his father on several later films. He was only 12 or 13 when Destination Moon was filmed, but it's possible he hung around the set and would know something. I believe he's still alive (at least, I can't find any record of his passing) and would be 72 or so now.
