Lucy
I just caught this 2014 movie and I am truly impressed with its boldness. Screw the scientific license. This is like Gulf, Friday, Lost Legacy, and Stranger rolled into an uncompromisingly hard sci-fi film spanning the age of the universe that doesn't try to spoon feed you or give all the answers. Plus, Scarlet Johansson. There's depth, there's heart, there's philosophy, there's jaw-dropping imagery. It has a distinctively Heinleinian stamp and a distinctively Heinleinian heroine.

Re: Lucy
I was a little taken aback by how fast the end seemed to happen. It seemed like it was a lot of setup, and then they realized they had nowhere else to go. But I did enjoy it overall; we had rented it so I'm not sure if there is director's commentary or other deleted scene work that might explain how it got to the finished cut.

I don't know what else you would want in an ending. She said she would die at that time, the fact that she found a way to continue completed that story.

Peter, I would take exception to your phrase "uncompromisingly hard sci-fi film," which to me would suggest a great deal of care has been taken to portray science and technology accurately. I do not feel this is the case. (-: But with your word "boldness," I emphatically agree.
I'll tell you what dawned on me as I was watching Lucy, and as one outrageous and implausible development was heaped upon another.
Remember 2013's Pacific Rim? It was about giant robots. Punching Godzillas.
Lucy is Pacific Rim, for neuroscience.

Re: Lucy
Yes, I erred by being adverbial where I meant to say "uncompromising, hard scifi." What I wrote sounded like you should expect The Martian. But it is uncompromising in the sense that it does not have committee-decided plot twists to maximize demographic appeal, and it is hard scifi in its exploration of grand themes such as time and intelligence. I got vibes of Clarke and Asimov. The homages to 2001 range from blatant to subtle. Bottom line, the suspension of disbelief worked for me. The only thing that jarred while I was watching it was thinking, laptops can't work that fast no matter how fast you type.
