Post Renegade Consumer
Jim Gifford is much too self-effacing (yes, really) to mention it here, but you should know that he has started a major movement at . It's a bold take on the fundamental problems of consumerism that leaves no stone unturned in the hunt for how and why our collective consciousnesses and unconsciousnesses got kidnapped by Madison Avenue. It takes the message of Salt Sugar Fat and expands it beyond food to the entire retail complex.

I signed up to participate, and I recommend all the thinking people on this fine Forum have a look and consider it.

This looks interesting. I read the site, might sign up in a bit. Jim's basic outlook is IMHO spot on. I'm less convinced that he's made his case that marketing/advertising techniques that bombard people are equivalent to forcing them to do anything. I actually think that they can be, but the argument needs work.

Jim, if you're lurking, and you haven't already discovered this book, read "Influence: the Psychology of Persuasion", by Robert Cialdini. He's an expert on marketing psychology, but his studies have led him far afield from sales and marketing. Among other things, the techniques that he describes are used by religious cults to recruit members and keep them. Somehow I suspect that the same arguments can be made about actual advertising when it's pervasive enough.

I'll delurk sooner or later over on the web site. :-)

I'll note that Renegade Consumer also seems to be focused on "Big Data" by "private" companies, and the dangers of that.

Rightly so, mostly because private companies are not currently under the same sort of scrutiny that the NSA and GCHQ (UK version of the same thing) are. The same problem exists with both, though. Good work done to fix one is not going to be 100% applicable to the other, but I'd guess it will be 90% applicable.
